Rondology: Defense

Posted by paul on October 26, 2012 at 11:25 AM

I know I've been a broken record on the subject of Rondo and defense, but I want to point out that at least one person appears to agree with me:  Brian Scalabrine.   On Bill Simmons radio show, Scal commented that a key issue for Rondo and for the Celtics is that Rondo needs to pick up his man-to-man defense.  He didn't say anything about Rondo being DPOY if he did that, but  I'll say it;  if Rondo raises the level of his defense on his man, without forswearing his penchant for gambling and wandering, but balancing that penchant better with more intensive defense on his man, and more of an effort to stretch the floor for the other team by pressuring the advance of the ball more, I think Rondo will be DPOY and we'll win a championship.

His rest pattern would probably have to change some.  I think he'd have to get shorter rests more often.  But with Terry, I think we can do that, because Terry is one of those guys whose special talent is being able to heat up quick off the bench.

Scal has been very good on his feelings. So glad he's beack in Boston doing the TV gig. But its fine Paul. Defense is the key,and it needs to put out there.

Its all will here about this season, so that record isn't broken yet. Its what sets the Celtics apart, its their commintment to defense.

The only thing Scalabrine has said that I don't agree with is his commentary on Ray. I love how boldly he is backing Rondo.

He's such a 'force multiplier' - makes everyone else play that much better.

Especially if you want to have a transition offense, you need some powerful, disruptive, tenacious defense.

Thanks Shawn. I appreciate that. I think maybe I got a little closer with this one.
