Celtics by the Numbers: Rondo's free throw improvement

Posted by shawn cassidy on October 15, 2012 at 8:00 AM

I watched the Celtics broadcast on the Yes network lSaturday night when the C's, and Knicks squared off. I didn't watch the Celtics by  choice on the Yes network, but during that broadcast I had to listen to Walt Frazier, and his partner speak about Rondo as if he was a second hand player. All they harped on was his jumper. They should of done their homework, because Rondo has been on a role so far this preseason. His free throw shooting has been perfect. He's 11-of-11 from the freebie line, and I get the sense that he's not done yet.

My expectation for Rondo's free throw shooting is simple. Just shoot at least 75% this season, and if he sneaks into the 80% area. Then kudos to Rondo for his great improvement. For Rondo's career he shoots only 61% from the foul line. So if he does shoot 75% than that's an amazing improvement, and realistic. And if you go by Rondo's percent of 59% from last season. That 75% sounds even better for him to achieve.

Karl Malone struggled when he entered the league, and  he showed improvements by year four in the NBA. His rookie season he shot 48%, off of 405 attempts. His second year  Karl showed a minor improvement of 59%. Malone averaged 75% or better for the remainder of his career after his fourth season. I can see Rondo following that same path.

Overall Rondo's confidence is higher. I think it's his confidence more than practice that's aided his improvement from the foul line. Because Rondo has shown us that he can nail jumpers with ease. It's when he becomes timid. All, and all Rondo is on the right track.

LOL, prob because Rondo has taken his mantle in the fashion world in the NBA. Rondo has shown us a strong improvement so far, that's so great.

Yeah - Rondo's haberdashery is probably the real bone of contention. Rondo the Glide.
