Recap: C's survive double overtime 117-115 over Mavs

The Celtics had a lead of 14, but a lead that large for the Celtics usually doesn't stick on the board. In a matter of minutes after going up 14. The Mavs started to chip away at the Celtics. The Celtics allowed the Mavs to shoot 51%, as the Celtics shot just 44%. The Celtics built their lead off of the Mavs turning the ball over 27  times. The Mavs tied the game 92-92 with 2:20 to go in the game, and it was a build up after the C's let the lead slip. The Celtics just slacked off on defense in the second half. They allowed a solid 43 points in the first half, but the defense we've talked about lately looked broken again.

After the Mavs tied the game, Rondo hit a 20 footer with 2:06 in the 4th. Fisher matched that with a three giving the Mavs a one-point lead 95-94. Pierce matched that with an elbow jumper with 1:37 to go to give the Celtics a 96-95 lead. It was a quick back, and forth. Damn I hate Fisher, that's all I have to say after that. The refs were pretty blah tonight, what do you expect with Joey Crawford. They called two tick-tack fouls in the final minute. Mayo would go to the line with 52 seconds to go after one of those tick-tack calls on Rondo. He would make just one to tie the game at 96-96. Pierce would take one of the worst jumpers with around 30 seconds to go. Damn I hate hero ball.

With 8 seconds to go, Rondo gambled, and won. He deflected the ball from Mayo, and KG recovered the ball. With 6.9 seconds to go Rondo would take the final shot, and he was stripped at the end of regulation.

If I was writing a story, I would have picked Terry to be the hero. In overtime  he took the first shot, and he set the tone with a three-point play to give the Celtics a 99-96 lead. With 2:46 to go the Mavs were down 99-98. Collision got two freebies after Bass fouled him. Collision would make one of two to tie the game at 99. With 2:08 to go, Pierce would do a vintage Pierce spin move, and that would give the C's a 101-99 lead. Green missed a layup at the 1:30 mark that could have breaking the tie. On the other end after the miss Terry stripped the ball. Rondo found him on the other end for a layup, but the Celtics missed their second easy layup in a row. Rondo would nab the board, and Fisher would be charged with a lose ball foul on Rondo. Fisher fouled out of the game.

Pierce tried his hand at hero ball again, and it worked. He nailed the go ahead jumper. With 40 seconds to  go Marion tied the game with a flip shot, and on the next play KG hit the go ahead jumper off of Rondo's 14th assist with 26 seconds to go. Rondo worried about picking up his 6th foul. Mayo went around Rondo to tie the game with 11 seconds to go in overtime.

Pierce took another bad hero ball shot at the end of the first overtime. To perhaps make up for that. He hit a three out of the gates in the second overtime. To give the Celtics a 108-105 lead. Mayo just worked the Celtics all night. He would lead the next Mavs basket to pull them within one. The Celtics would fine a bit of luck, as the Mavs two easy hoops in the next two plays.

Pierce was taking way to many bad shots, and I felt like the Celtics have taken a step back in that sense. Rondo stripped Mayo with 1:05 to go, and other end he had his shot blocked by Vince Carter. But as soon as the Mavs got the ball back. They turned it over with 48 seconds remaining. With 35.5 to go Rondo got a quick layup to give the Celtics a 110-107 lead, and than he got the rebound on the Mavs miss. Rondo got the ball to Pierce, and he was fouled. He missed one of two freebies. The Celtics had a 111-107 lead with 17 seconds to go, and in NBA time that feels like a game within itself sometimes. With 9.3 to go Vince Carter hit a three to pull the Mavs within one point 111-110.

Pierce would hit two free throws to move the lead to 113-110 with 8 second to go. The Celtics would play the foul game with under 8 seconds to go. The Mavs were out of timeouts, and the Celtics would roll the dice on that move. Pierce would head to the line once again with 5.3 left in overtime number two. He mad both, and the Mavs turned the ball over out of the in-bounds. Lee would seal the deal, and the Celtics won in double overtime to improve to 12-9.

  • Rondo played a career high 53 minutes tonight.
  • Pierce had a season high of 34 points.
  • Green with a solid 15 points, and not the best ovetime minutes though.
  • The Celtics lost the glass 43-42

Bad defensive game, but at least they held on to the game.
