Erving with some major cheap shots on Bird. Larry is being held in a choke hold, while Erving punches like crazy on Birds head. That would be a season ending suspension in today's NBA.

That was pure thuggery by Doctor J. The first move was a deliberate hip throw - pulling Bird one way with locked elbows, then tossing him over the hip. Martial arts stuff. Then the throat grab was a vicious escalation of what at that point was, as I recall, a shove fest. Then, for J to pound Bird while he was being held - wow. That's street stuff. Pure, rotten cowardice. J turned into a vicious monster that night, and as I recall, he never fully apologized. I damn well hope that such behavior would produce a long suspension in today's NBA, but I doubt it. Artest's elbow to Harden was a lot worse and got him only five days. That could have been a kill shot. All J did really, when you come right down to it, was get off some frustration at being shown up. He reminded me there of our own beloved Dwayne Wade, a master at getting away with thuggery without facing any consequences. In fact, I'd call Wade the alltime master at that vicious art. And I don't think even Artest was deliberately trying to hurt Harden, whereas I'm pretty sure Wade deliberately injured Rondo two years ago.

So was the NBA wilder then? No. I don't think so.

Man, I can't stand that asshole Artest. The guy should be out of the league.

If I were the other players I'd be upset about the situation. Who can feel safe playing with him?
