Ainge's answer to me sounds like Rondo won't be back until December or until the early part of 2014. I'm not surprised by Danny's response, but with camp a couple of weeks away. It sounds like Rondo will be there with a clipboard in his hands instead of a basketball. The first priority is to have Rondo right.
1. Update on Rondo: Ainge was asked by Simmons when fans can expect to see Rondo (rehabbing after an ACL tear) back on the court playing for the Celtics.
"I’m not sure [when Rondo will be back],” Ainge said. “Rondo was working out [Tuesday] with all the guys. He’s not near 100 percent yet, but he’s out doing shooting drills and ball-handling drills. I really don’t have a date yet. We want to be careful with him, obviously. He’s hungry and anxious. I like the communication that’s going on between him and Brad [Stevens]. I think Rondo is looking forward to this stage of his career and, obviously he has to get healthy, but I think he really likes the challenge that’s ahead of him."
I also like the communication between the two so far, or as far as we know. Not only did Danny discuss Rondo's health, but he also talked about the potential trade that sent Rondo to New Orleans a couple of season ago.
Simmons: 'Is it fair to say you're only trading Rondo for a blue chipper?'
Ainge: 'I think so. He's such a special player. We came close to getting Chris Paul for Rondo before Chris went to the Clippers. There were discussions about us getting (CP3). We're not looking to deal Rondo.'
Is this first time on record that Danny has said that? Not sure if he has owned up to that rumor back when it happened. I feel like Danny has finally become content and happy with Rondo as the cornerstone. He's always looked at Rondo as one of the best in the league. He even tried to get one of the best in the game for him in Paul. To me Rondo and Paul are equals. Rondo does things better, and Paul does things better. I think Rondo holds an edge over Paul, because Rondo has a lot of intangibles.
As for Rondo's future. I still don't believe is 100% safe. On the other hand, I believe Danny has some shred of loyalty in his body.
