Thoughts on the game
I call this a junk game because everything was against the Celtics. The refs were amateurish tonight, and the Celtics missed free throws, and they lost the glass 58-42 with poor effort, or poor game planning. Randolph, and Green were picked on all night by the refs. Randolph fouled out with 16 points, and 7 rebounds in just 13 minutes. The Celtics had the Cavs on the glass for a good portion of this game, and everything fell apart. I think we saw a lot of solid things tonight, but it didn't result in a win. Terrance Williams added 6 rebounds which was needed, and 9 points. Avery Bradley left the game with with a bruised collarbone, and his shooting slump continued with missed layups, and lousy three-point shooting with a 2-of-8 performance. I'll have more thoughts on Bradley tomorrow morning.
The Celtics have no answers anymore for their rebounding woes. What's the issue behind it all? For so many years now the Celtics have lost games because of rebounding. The Celtics even have issues rebounding the ball against the Heat who are right there near the bottom in the league with the Celtics. I believe this one stat, and the effort behind will be the end of the Celtics season when the time comes. I'm sorry to sound negative on that front. Kevin is out, and Pierce was out. Those two guys are the best rebounders left since Rondo is out, and Sully for that matter. I think the Celtics are more then capable of rebounding. I think it boils down to defensive philosophy.
Jeff Green scored a team-high 23 points on 8-of-13 shooting with nine rebounds and four assists, while Shavlik Randolph scored a career-high 16 points in 13 minutes with 7 rebounds. The Celtics missed 9 free throws (13-22 for the game). You know the rebounding total, and the Celtics only had 11 turnovers which isn't bad. The Celtics also had 23 assists which is good considering no Paul Pierce, and KG.The Cavs outscored the Celtics in the paint 52-38.Both teams shot 40% from the field. The bench scored a solid 40 points compared to Cleveland's 21 points.Tristan Thompson posted a game-high 29 points and 17 rebounds, while Alonzo Gee added 16 points and 10 rebounds.
This team is just working kinks out at this point, and resting guys. I won't buy much into the loss. But I do take in account the rebounding, because it's been an issue for years, and even if the Celtics are healthy it still causes issues. I think the Celtics have a lot going for them, but without KG the defense is below average. With KG the rebounding is still a deadly flaw. Can the Celtics overcome not having Rondo, and poor rebounding in the playoffs. It's a question that's been on our minds for months. The playoffs are two weeks away, and the Celtics road to banner 18 may have to wait, and I hope it doesn't.
