Celtics Morning Joe: Terry's confidence too much?

Posted by shawn cassidy on August 23, 2012 at 6:00 AM

Terry has us all glued to the computer screen, and in a few months he'll have us all glued to our TV's. I've been a fan of his confidence, and his early love with the Celtics culture. He's said everything right up to this point, and it seems like every other day their are new quotes from Terry proclaiming the Celtics as champions. I love it, because I believe him, but after the last set of quotes. I just thought for a moment. Hold off on the comments. Let the winning do the talking. Let's play the games first.

But I also know it's not Terry if he's silent. If this is his way to motivate than so be it. Here are the recent comments.

"I've already got my predictions right here," Terry said, pointing to his biceps. "Now it's a little Celtic man.

"[The tattoo is] healing up now, but it's a Celtic man and he's got the trophy spinning. That's nothing to spite what we did in Dallas, but I think we've got a team where we're going to do it again -- there's no doubt in my mind."

Terry I love his thoughts on Rondo. Calling him the best point guard in the game. Again I believe in what Terry says. We need everyone behind Rondo this season for this whole thing to work. His endorsement of Rondo should rub off on everyone in green. Terry's hungry, and Terry is a winner. Terry is focused on this team, and winning as a valued member of this team in any role that needs to be filled. That's the most important thing about Terry.

We've seen Rondo do this too. We've seen Rondo put up big words that put his team on the spot. I think Terry is crazy like a fox. We've all talked about this team for five years, about the way it can't seem to get motivated until its back is against the wall, and about how that's not the attitude that wins championships, about how that's the attitude that gets you to almost winning. Even in 2008, when the Celtics were by far the best team, they seemed to have to 'do it the hard way'. I think Terry is trying to change that culture. He's trying to put the team 'on the spot'. Maybe some teams can try to slip in the back door of lowered expectations, but I don't think this team can. He wants this team to fight for dominance and homecourt advantage from day one, like junk yard dogs defending a bone that they believe they already have.

I think he's got the right attitude.

And I love the way he is pushing Rondo. There again I think he is getting at something we've been talking about for a long time now; that this team's best player for a while now has been Rondo, and a lot of the best players around the league, especially the older, greater players, know that. This team needs to unleash Rondo.

In a very interesting way, Terry seems to be making a point rather aggressively that he came to this team for a reason, to win a championship, and that he sees some things that need to happen for that to happen, some things about the team culture that need to change.

I love his mindset. Plus with Allen leaving. He's coming right in,and filling his spot the way it was supposed to be played.

Why do you think it's better if the younger guys haven't this attitude?

I'm sorry Morena - I was referring to the old guys outplaying all the youngsters - they aren't outplaying all of them!

I totally agree with you that the team needs an infusion of Terry's attitude. I think Doc is right that in the past, they've often played it cool, and let a lot of games they should have won slide into the W column. I think that he and Rondo are going to change the culture of the team together to one that blows teams off the court and keeps them off.
