Pierce vs James: 2006 the first duel

Posted by shawn cassidy on August 19, 2011 at 12:05 PM

It was a cold February night in Boston, and the city would have a heat wave the following day after the city of Boston watched a regular season classic between the Celtics, and Cavs the night before.

The Celtics had a lack luster season, but the star of the club was having the best season of his career. He ended the season with an average of 26.8 points per game, and seven boards per game, and he rounded his stats off with 5 assists a night. The Celtics had made the playoffs four years in a row,but with a new look team, and a much younger team Paul found himself in a rebuilding mode with the Celtics.

As for the Cavs and James. They finally put together a winning team. They had a mix of veteran guys, and a few young stand outs. Pierce, and James had battled back and forth for many years, but on February 15th 2006 the rivalry would hit an all-time high.

We knew James, and Pierce disliked each other, but on that in February they wanted to show each other up the entire night. It was a classic duel between two of the best players in the league. The garden crowd was involved, and this gave the struggling Celtics something to look forward too,and for the Celtics fans it was nice to see some life in the team. This season, and this game was a step into a  prelude that was waiting around the corner in both players basketball lives.

The first quarter was a showcase from both players. It was raining jumpers between Lebron, and Paul. Paul was killing James, and Lebron was returning the favor. Paul pulled off an old school fake against James, and Paul flushed the ball in the hoop. The game was a battle of ego,and will on the floor. The Celtics at this point in the season needed a win if they had any hope for the 8th seed in the East. The game would head into the fourth quarter tight. The  Cavs held a small lead for the majority of the last quarter. With under 10 seconds to go. Paul had the ball, and he was going to take the last shot to tie the game,or win the game. The Celtics, and Pierce caught a break, and Paul was fouled with 0.2 seconds to go. Paul sank both free throws, and the game was headed to Overtime at 93-93. The Celtics, and Cavs would be in another dead lock, and the game would go into a second overtime. The Celtics held a lead until the 2 minute mark hit. The Cavs would take lead soon after. The Celitcs fell at home, but the real story was Paul scoring a career high 50 points against James who had 43.

The Celtics missed the playoffs for the first time since 2002,and the Cavs made the playoffs for the first time since 1998,and the first time in the James era. Enjoy the clips I found from the classic game.
