Celtics Beat Post New Entry

I hate to say it,but I don't want Glen Davis back

Posted by shawn cassidy on June 21, 2011 at 1:05 AM

How can I want a guy out of town who improved this season. He improved his scoring yes,and he also took the most charges this season. In years past I was in Baby's corner, but his play in the second half of the regular season, and his no show act in the playoffs really set my mind on Davis. I already didn't like his undersized frame. He's barley 6"5,and he doesn't have much length at all. Glen hustles, but sometimes you need a little more than hustle. Glen made the offense about him at a certain point in the regular season. I'm not sure why Glen forced so many bad shots. I guess it was because of his contract year, but that gives Davis no reason to play hero basketball. During a few stretches Glen attempted more field goals then KG,or Ray Allen. Glen developed a good 15 foot jump shot, but he fell in love with the jump shot.

Glen has made the news in the last couple of days. This is what Davis had to say about the playoffs.

"(The postseason struggles) weighed on me a lot," Davis said during a community appearance in which the first of three deserving local families received a Celtics-themed court and bedroom makeover. "I pride myself on playing good basketball, especially when you need it. Every postseason I've played tremendously good, to the point where it was like, 'Wow.' But this summer it didn't happen because I felt, mentally, I wasn't ready and prepared enough for what was in front of me. I didn't prepare for it well mentally, and it affected the way I played. That's what I've been doing this offseason, concentrating on making sure that postseason won't happen again.

"This summer's a different summer for me as far as just growing fully and being who I can truly be as a person and in my game as a player. Mentally I've been exercising my mind because of what's about to happen. I've always said I need to work on a certain part of my game and this year mentally I wasn't there. My body was there, but I was not there mentally."

I hate to write off a guy who played really well in past years, and who showed some improvements in the first half of the season last year. I think Glen uses his wide big body to help his cause against the tree's in the NBA,but I think Glen needs to lose weight. Glen will expect a nice size contract. I think Glen is worth around 5 million a year, and that could be a bit high right now. Jeff Green is the free agent re-sign I would target.

"I feel I know what's most important to me and that's Glen being Glen. I can't perform the way I need to perform if I'm not Glen Davis. I need to be in a situation where I'm going to be Glen Davis. If it's here with the Celtics or with somebody else, I just want to make sure I'm Glen Davis, whatever I do, wherever I'm at. That's all I'm really concentrating on, being Glen Davis, and being a complete player."

Asked if he can be "Glen Davis" in Boston, Davis endured a long pause before answering.

"I can be Glen Davis wherever," he said. "It depends on the system, the people around the system, who is going to let Glen Davis be Glen Davis, not let Glen Davis be sGlen Davis this season fell into playing time.

With the Perkins injury, and trade Baby got some heavy minutes. Also with the O'neal brothers out Glen picked up the crunch time minutes. Glen has never ran away from the big moments. I don't think he always comes through, but he's not afraid. I think Glen Davis and the way he played in the post season was a major mini issue for the Celtics. When I say mini problem I mean the Celtics had major problems with their bigger name stars. Baby is a role player, and the playoff run isn't made if he give us 20 and 10. If he played well the Celtics could have been up 3-2,or at least down 2-3 going back to Boston. The Celtics desperately needed a big,and Glen wasn't able to offer that. All of us waited for the breakout game, but it never came. I think the Celtics need to check their options. I would re-sign Baby if he comes cheap. If Glen is hell bent on being the man. He should move on.

It's just so clear that Davis has become the lightning rod for fan dissatisfaction. Yes, he's a problematic player in many ways, but that's why he's a bench player. Does he have aspirations beyond that? Of course. But he's actually been very willing to play whatever role he was called on to play, as long as his role was made clear to him. Come on now; it can't be hard to see that The Trade was confusing to him, as it was to nearly every other player on the team! And a confused Davis is a Davis who doesn't play well. We know this. It's not a mysterious thing.

Davis is being scapegoated, because no one wants to point the finger at Danny. And I guess there is something just so irresistible about attacking the fat guy. The whole thing is just surreal at this point. Everyone is talking about our desperate need for bigs, yet not only do they refuse to talk about the fact that Ainge shipped an excellent big out of town, but the one thing they DO want to talk about is getting rid of one of the few bigs we have!!!

And to say that Green should be a higher priority puzzles me. For goodness sake, Green is at least as big an enigma as Davis, and he's only been with us for two months! Baby has been a pretty solid contributor for a long time. Seriously, where would we have been last year without Davis?

I'd resign both Davis and Green for minimal amounts. Both are underachieving journeyman, but at least Davis has been a real contributor off the bench.

What's going on right now amongst Celtics fans is basically scapegoating. You see it in the hate for Davis. You see it in the constant stream of ideas for trading Rondo. The Celtics fandom is fit to be tied, but the one thing they won't do is get mad at the person they should be mad at - Ainge.

No way do I want to trade Rondo. I don't want to lose the core 4 of guys we love. I don't think Glen was the main reason we lost. I do blame Danny for making a bad move in the middle of the season. Baby tried to take games over. I love his confidence, but he hurt the Celtics by taking too many shots. If he can play free again, and he can take the right money, I"ll want him back in green. I'm not a fan of Baby being undersized. I hate to give up on players, but he put a bad taste in mouth. THANKS FOR THE FEEDBACK THOUGH ALWAYS WELCOME. You have great points.

I was never a fan who wanted baby out. Once baby became the 2nd best big along side KG. Baby got a little ego. He started to play bigger then his game. He was shooting too much, and he was pounded on the boards. I loved Davis as a third or fourth big off the bench. If Davis can go back to the old Davis then I want him,but I'm not sure Davis can go back,

He's not big enough. I don't think the Celtics should spend the money on him.
