Should the Lakers rebuild if Howard leaves? Do they need to?

Posted by shawn cassidy on July 1, 2013 at 5:20 AM

The Lakers are stuck in a hard spot. If Howard leaves this team is old, and not in a good Spurs kind of way. They will have Kobe who's still one of the best in the world, but he will also be returning from the season ending hamstring injury. So here is a look at the Lakers payroll below. If look at this coming season. They will surely not contend. The biggest concern for me is after this season when they have only 9.7 million on the books, and that's for Nash who could be done by then. Many expect James to leave Miami for the Lakers. If he really hates Boston he goes there. I think Boston's level of hate for James will by astronomic. The Lakers could in a very good spot if Howard returns or goes. They have a ton of cap after this season. Scary for the Celtics league leading 17 banners.

We won't be in a position to hate. We'll be looking up at the Lakers as they quickly retool and return to competition. Right now we are stuck with commitments we don't want and no salary cap space, and picks as our future, but that won't come to fruition for several years.
