Celtics by the Numbers: Paul Pierce's legacy

Posted by shawn cassidy on June 30, 2013 at 5:10 AM

Paul Pierce will have his number retired, and who knows. Maybe he'll comeback for one season on a cheap deal to walk away from the team, and fans that loved him for over 15 years. Paul has made a mark all over the Celtics record book. Thankfully in 2008 he got the biggest monkey off of his back with a NBA Championship and Finals MVP. So where does Paul rank in Celtics lore?

Games
1. John Havlicek*1270
2. Robert Parish*1106
3. Paul Pierce1102
4. Kevin McHale*971
5. Bill Russell*963
6. Bob Cousy*917
7. Tom Sanders916
8. Larry Bird*897
9. Don Nelson872
10. Sam Jones*871

Paul Pierce was just five games from passing Robert Parish for second all-time. I still don't think he would have caught Havlicek. Here's where Pierce stands below. It was great to see him pass Bird.

Notice how high all the three 70s stars are in mpg. Now that's a Big Three.

To me, Pierce correlates best with Hondo. He's that perfect second guy, a niche player, but a brilliant niche player who excels at all aspects of the game. He is a craftsman. There's another level that he doesn't get to, but he gets to the highest level below that. So, in my eyes, the all-time ranking should be Russell - Bird - Cowens - KG - Cousy Havlicek - Mchale - Pierce - Parish - Sam Jones. KG is the guy who really turned the Celtics around.
