Rondology: Blame Game Aflame

Posted by paul on June 22, 2013 at 8:05 PM

This has been an incredibly disappointing offseason after an incredibly disappointing season.   I felt that one could see immediately, as soon as the season ended, that  no one's mind was on figuring out what when wrong and how it could be addressed by the team as a team.  Right away folks like Doc, Danny and Paul Pierce started positioning themselves - at least that's how I saw what they were doing.  How can anyone take all this seriously?  Almost all of us agreed last fall that this was a talented team with high hopes.  Are we really going to rewrite history now, ala Danny, and claim that the talent was never there?  Or are we going to jump on board with the finger pointing?   Was it really one person's fault?  This was a team that thrived on ubuntu, but it seems that everyone has forgotten that relationships don't just happen.  They take commitment and work.  Blame gaming is a step away from that, not towards that, a decisive step.

Of course, we all know who always ends up at the tail end of the Blame Circle:  Rajon Rondo.  But even if one didn't know this, one could see that Rondo was going to end up in the crosshairs after the Clipper Trade Dance, since the leitmotif of that whole affair was clearly Rondo's key teammates and coach apparently trying desperately to get away from him.  Rondo is difficult.  We all know this.  Very difficult.  But he's also a tremendous talent.  Everyone knows that too.   Why can supposedly superb examples of human nobility -- such as KG, PP and Doc -- not be adults about this?  Will they really get by with the pretense that they share no blame?   Will they really get by with blaming everything on Rondo?  Good grief, KG was soft for much of this last season, so soft that Rondo felt forced to show him up for it.  Can you not accept criticism and blame at all KG?  PP's horrible play was the biggest reason for our awful six game losing streak that led to Rondo's injury, nor has PP ever fully accepted Rondo's rise, even though working better with Rondo could have meant a longer and more successful career for Pierce. Can't take any blame, Paul?   And then there's Doc.  Does anyone think that this team was ready for this season?   Does anyone think that Doc had any real ideas for this season?  Does anyone think that Doc has made a real effort to adjust the team's approach to Rondo's talents?   When your point guard has to physically push his teammates on fast break, is there not something wrong?

No one is making excuses for Rondo's bad behavior.  But he has earned the right to recieve constructive criticism, and not to always be the scapegoat.  In fact, this team as a whole could benefit from some honest discussion of what has gone wrong.  Is it too easy and convenient to blame all on Rondo?   It may be easy and convenient, but it isn't just, it isn't correct, and it isn't doing anyone any good.    We need a different approach this offseason, and we've seen no sign of it so far.

So I call on Doc to make a start on Monday.

Perhaps Danny saw some of this, and maybe Ainge is taking a side. Maybe that side is Rondo?

I've wondered about that too, lifer. I hope you are right. That's the side I would take. If Doc just won't design the team around Rondo, with Rondo's help, it's surely time to find someone who will.

Lol! Ubuntu takes work, doesn't it, Shawn?! It's all so family-like, with the youngest kid the one who always gets the brunt of the blame!

You're right Paul, such a disappointing offseason so far!! It's just June and I'm already tired of all this situation. Honestly, I don't even know if this is true. I mean, when I first read about this Rondo-Doc fight the first thing that came to my mind was Doc press conference after last year final loss to miami. They may have had altercation and everything else, but right now I can't believe that Doc has an intense dislike for Rondo. Before pointing my toe, I want to see how this all play out and see what the parts involved have to say.

I'm guessing that it happened after the Clippers game this year, Morena. Something big happened after that game. I'm sure of it. This could have been what happened. I'm sure more information will come out about it.
