Roster? No Worries Mate.

Paul brought up some good points in his post yesterday, it is a mountain of numbers. It does appear that the roster still has needs and it is quickly running out of money again. I think it was pegged at 68 million, I saw a couple of places at 64. Doesn't sound like much is left. No worries!

I say that because details of verbal contracts can't be released until after the actual signings which of course isn't until Wednesday. We have to assume the salvation for us is in those details.

What will make a big difference is how the contracts are structured. That is to say for instance, Bass is reported to be back for 3 years and 20 million. Simple math says that is about 6 and a half mil a year. But I am guessing it will be backloaded meaning maybe something like 5 mil this season, 6 mil next, and then jump to 9 million after someone like Ray's two year contract (if he takes it) expires. The four year for Green would probably be the same way, taking a big jump in the last or last two years after Pierce's big contract is over. That is probably why the deal is four years in order to get him to take a smaller amount upfront. So yeah, Green will get 40 mil total, and Bass will get 20 mil total, but what really matters is how much they get in a particular year. We might well find they will only cost 10 or 11 mil combined this year.

This is where we just have to trust Danny. We can debate whether he is the great judge of talent or not. It is hard to deny though after moves he has made in recent years with nothing to work with that he can't add and subtract. And maybe even be able to pull a rabbit out of his hat.

Personally, I am still confident.

Good points, but not necessarily encouraging, in that I'm not sure we want to be committed to big payments to Green and Bass in a couple of years. That scares me a bit.

The commitment goes away with a trade or a buy out and release. Either one frees cap space in the year it is done.
