Celtics Beat Post New Entry

Question of the day: Bass or Green?

Posted by shawn cassidy on June 18, 2012 at 8:05 AM

The Celtics will have many tough decisions this off season. The only good news from that, is  the Celtics have cap space. As you know Green missed the entire season, and Bass came from the Baby deal. Bass had a career year, and now he wants a heft contract. Bass may deserve a minor pay increase, but as power forwards are concerned. Bass is overwhelmingly an under performing big. He lacks rebounding, and his defense is suspect. He can score the rock well, and he does hustle. But Bass may want too much.

Green played as a power forward in OKC. His natural position is small forward, but he can actually rebound the ball as well as Bass. The Celtics used him mainly as a three, but they also used him as a four. Jeff Green is best served as a small forward in the NBA. I think the Celtics have to make one decision. They have to pick Green, or Bass. If I had a pick, I would go with Green. It's very hard saying that because we all fell in love with Bass this season. But for me, I think Green fits in with Rondo, so  I think they'll go down that path. So which free agent would you sign?

If I had to pick one I'd pick Green. But I really don't want either, not for hefty bucks. No way. We should not spend significant money this summer unless it's on someone we really know we want next to Rondo for years.

I see Ainge being very stubborn, and not wanting to spend. They could build this team around min. Contracts, but with players that are fairly young, who could work with Rondo.

Green for sure. Not for the entire farm though.

Now is the time for Ainge's ability to find hidden diamonds to shine forth...

I agree with Paul, let them both walk. We need a good back up at the 3 and if the rumors are correct and the Celts trade up in the draft to get Barnes, that solves that problem. If we need a Green in green, think about bringing back Gerald Green. Shannon Brown or Landry Fields are cheap possibilities that could fit, and there is always Pietrus.
At the 4, the forgotten man here is Chris Wilcox. He was just starting to really click with Rondo when he went down and proved he can back up at center. Ilyasova and several other intriguing names are out there as well.
There is no real need to pick either Bass or Green. They went free agent so they could be in control of their payday. The way I see it, for the same or less money, there are better or at least as good options out there.
