Celtics by the Numbers: C's field goal attempts down a bit without Rondo
|
|

The Celtics defense has improved, and the Celtics points off turnovers has improved greatly. Through the first 43 games the Celtics rank 20th in points off turnovers. Since Rondo's season ended the Celtics have been the 4th best team scoring off of turnovers. Those numbers are from ESPN Boston.
With the Celtics moving the ball more, and with the easy points adding up. You would think the Celtics shot attempts would have improved. The Celtics sit at 26th in the NBA with 80.1 attempts per game. Boston ranks 16th in the league with 36.8 made field goals. Boston ranks 6th in field goal percentage with 46%. During Rondo's departure the Celtics virtually take the same amount attempts. They have taken 79 per game, and if you takeaway the 88 shot attempts in the double overtime victory against Miami. They've taken 76 field goal attempts per game without Rondo.
ESPN BOSTON
The Celtics are averaging 2½ more turnovers and six additional points off those giveaways per 48 minutes over the last four games. Maybe the most staggering number is that a whopping 22.9 percent of Boston's total points have come off turnovers in recent games as opposed to 17.1 percent over the first 43 games of the season. Let's take a closer look at the numbers.
The Celtics are scoring in new ways without Rondo. When you don't have one of the best point guards to lead your offense, you have to take advantage of opportunities and the Celtics have jumped on turnovers, and fast break points.

I wish we could have seen a defense with Rondo, Bradley and Lee all going after opposing offenses. It could have been unique.
It could have, and let's hope Rondo gets a chance next year.
The team is showing that are more than capable of handling the basketball. Rondo pay attention to this new style of offense and find your way to seemlessly fit into it. It will be perfect really, play all out on defense. No slacking, period. When you need a little blow, let Bradley or Pierce, just someone else hold the ball a little longer while you catch your breath. Or just motion to Doc to let you sit for a bit. Do not play hero ball. Trust your teammates. Defense. Defense. DEFENSE!!!
Watch, learn, and take notes Rajon. Banner 18 is still speaking... it's time to listen.

Rondo is too smart to not realize that slacking on defense this year really hurt the team. I understand that he and Doc "thought" it would be best that way so he can save his energy to run the offense, but this current stretch of games w/o Rondo absolutely shows that defense is key. It always has been, it always will be. These past 4 games have also shown us that it is not necessary by any means for Rondo to take control of the offense on every play every second he is on the floor.
