Before tonight game, I was a little worried about our team’s shape. Sully said it better after Friday practice section: every time you get a break like this one, you kind of get out of shape mentally. Moreover, it’s Christmas time, and everyone gets to eat a little bit more than they usually do, so even the physical shape could have been a problem. And I think it was: Cleveland almost pulled off an amazing comeback, outscoring the Celtics 34 to 18 in the last quarter. They basically scored twice our points; Kyrie Irving and Cleveland’s bench almost killed us.
We played a really good game for three quarters, during which we shot 51%, while we held them to a shooting percentage of 42%. But as we said many time this year, the game last 48 minutes, and too many times we’ve seen our team play for three quarters. This time, I think we really ran out of gas in the last period. In fact, save for those last 12 minutes, in every quarter, a different player stepped up to help the team.
In the first period, Green has been the hero, scoring 12 of his 19 points. If you look at the final box score, you can easily tell that Green played a good game, grabbing also 8 rebounds and converting all the 7 free throws he earned. The game though reflects his inconsistency: he shot 62,5% from the field in the first half, and 0% in the second half. He scored a couple of free throws and grabbed four rebounds, but that’s not enough.
Bass instead played a pretty balanced game, finishing with 15 points and 6 rebounds. He’s been especially effective in the third quarter, together with Crawford, but he’s been pretty consistent throughout the game, and he grew in the second half. He also shot the ball pretty well and added four assist to his stat line, to go with a couple of blocked shot.
Bradley is another guy that had a pretty consistent game. Let alone for the third quarter, he played a pretty good game finishing with 18 points, eight rebounds and three assists. To his credit he’s been our top scorer in the last quarter, when everybody else struggled badly, he scored 7 of our 18 points going 3for4 from the field.
Crawford has been the hero of the third quarter, when together with Bass he kept us in the game scoring 10 points making every shot, even behind the three point line, and every free throw. He finished the game with 19 points, 5 rebounds and 5 assists. He turned the ball over a couple of times in the first quarter, but then he took pretty good care of the ball committing just another turnover in the last three periods.
Off the bench, we had a pretty good help from Lee and Humphries. The two of them combined for 21 points, and scored 10 of his eleven points in the second quarter, while Humphries perfectly distributed his contribution in the four quarters. Kelly was able to help just off the boards with his 7 rebounds, because other than that he scored just one point and turned the ball over three times.
It’s pretty strange to see the Celtics melt down like that in the fourth quarter, but as I said, most of it I think it’s the long break we had. In the long run it will sure help our team, but right now, we have to pay attention and keep our focus on the game. We’ll need these energies in the next days as we’ll play a back-to-back-to-back starting from the 31st of December.
I like our chances in that stretch.
Let’s go Celtics.
