Jeff brings his offensive "A" game in the Celtics opener

Jeff Green came to play in the Celtics season opener. It was okay if you questioned Jeff heading into the 2013-14 regular season. He wasn't noticeable during the preseason, and he gave me headaches, and probably you as well. Something seemed to click for Green in game one of the season though.

Green attacked the basket  Wednesday night like last year, and the end result was a game-high 25 points to go along with five rebounds, two assists, a steal and a block over 37 minutes. Nice stat sheet, but it didn't result in a win for the Celtics who fell 93-83 in Toronto. The question will remain, will we get this guy Friday night in Boston?

"I was kind of zoned out," said Green. "Going into the game, I just told myself, put your head down and drive. Be aggressive. And, if I play hard, the offense will come, but I wanted to focus on defense. I was guarding DeMar, he’s a great player. I just wanted to try to be aggressive and put them on their heels."

Green was up and down defensively, but it's encouraging that he was willing to take on the challenge of two of the opponent's top scorers when all the casual fan tends to worry about is his offensive production. Green gave up 12 points on 11 possessions defended, according to Synergy data, but didn't commit any shooting fouls and the Gay/DeRozan combo made tough shots over him at times.

The Celtics would happily bottle up this effort from Green for future use.

"I thought he was pretty aggressive, I thought he was pretty good," said Stevens. "He was playing against two good players ... and to do it on both ends is a sign of good things to come for Jeff."

Jeff was burned often on the defensive end. Rudy Gay put up 19 points, and other wings that he covered  go their shot's in on Green as well. Back to Jeff's offensive performance again. He was attacking  the rim, and because of that he was rewarded with 9 freebies. Jeff will have to continue this play for the Celtics to have any legit chance this season. Not a legit chance at a title, but a playoff spot, which still seems hard to pull off.

Shocked by his performance, but he didn't make others better, and that's the measure of a great player.

His defense looked pretty good to me. For the most part Jeff was sticking to his man and was there to help on defense. Rudy and Derozan hit some tough shots right in Green's grill though, nothing you can do about that except tip your hat.
