Celtics Title Town

Celtics Blog Post New Entry

Has Danny Ainge's mindset changed about this season?

Posted by shawn cassidy on October 4, 2013 at 2:05 AM

During the early press conferences over the summer. Ainge expressed that this current roster may not be good enough to compete, and I don't think many disagreed with him. This team will play hard, and they'll compete for a playoff spot, but when it comes to a banner, I don't think I need detail why it won't happen this season. I know most of you have seen this article already, but I thought I would comment on it anyway.

"Those guys are all trying to win," Ainge said of Wallace and Green and Rondo. "They don't want to go out there and play for a draft pick. Brad Stevens in his first year as coach -- he's going to give a big pep talk about coming together as a team. How do you fake that? There's not one thing fake about Brad Stevens. I think that's why he'll be able to sell it."

"If all of a sudden Rondo's out for the year and a couple other key guys, and maybe goals change over the course of the year," said Ainge, and then he stopped the dark thoughts there. "But starting the season out," he carried on brightly, "we're starting out full blazes. And see what we can do."

"As I walk around town, more than anything else there are those that say, 'Hey, don't win too many games,"' said Ainge, the Celtics' president of basketball operations. "There are so many fans that want us to play for the draft." Ainge's measured response is that they should be more careful what they wish for. "That's harder than people recognize," said Ainge of losing as a strategy. "It's a really easy thing to conceptualize, and an easy thing to talk about and philosophize about. But it's a hard thing to live through -- for fans, for coaches, for owners, for sponsors, for our TV partners."

"If Kareem Abdul-Jabbar was out there to change your franchise forever, or Tim Duncan was going to change your franchise for 15 years? That might be a different story," said Ainge. "I don't see that player out there."

"I could see our team playing better than what some people think," said Ainge. "But I could also see us having some struggles because we don't really have that star. With the exception of Rondo, of course; but we don't know when he'll be back."

Danny's vibe seems a bit different with this team. He's a bit wishy washy through this article, but it seems like he understands that Rondo is a star, and that no miracle rookie will bring the Celtics closer to a title now. He know's that Rondo is the building block, and that putting good veterans around him is the right way to go about it. Danny will have a lot of picks to either trade, or to pick up solid youngsters. The Celtics are trying their hardest to erase any thoughts of tanking, and they should, that's a stain  that no team wants to have around.

I've been saying for the longest time, that tanking this season, will only hurt Brad Stevens as this teams coach. He needs to just have this team working hard, and running his plan. They may still lose a lot of games, but the point is this. They just need to do it natural. If it's who they are, then they'll lose a lot of games. The tanking talk will stick around, but the thing that some need to get. The Celtics won't toss games for picks. Not happening.

Nice piece. Tanking is such a horrible thing to do. The same fans who call for tanking had better NOT EVER COMPLAIN when it comes out that basketball is almost as rigged as rasslin. Don't you dare complain then, fans who called for tanking. You call for fraud, and then you complain about fraud?!

How good can we be this year? It's hard to say. I don't agree with those who say that we have no upside. I think they underestimate the talent we have. But I also disagree with those who look at Sully and see Unseld, look at Olynyk and see Nowitski. Funny thing is that I'll bet some of those dreamers don't see the great player we do have, Rondo...
