Rondo Ravings: Cornerstone

Posted by paul on September 17, 2013 at 8:00 AM

Folks continue to debate the question of whether one can build a championship team around Rondo as if it were still an open question.  Ever notice how stubborn Haters are?  Rondo's fans are usually willing to acknowledge the many legitimate criticisms that abound, it seems to me.  Haters are like diamonds - hard and full of thoughts like shards of light.  As much as the way the Cs played after Rondo went down last year appeared to confirm serious tensions between him and the rest of the team, their playoff collapse seemed to confirm that Rondo has been the primary reason for the team's playoff success in recent years.   There is no reasonable doubt that Rondo is,  in some ways, the perfect example of a player to build a champion team around.  The debate, such as it is, has changed now from "can he", to "will he", and that is really a discussion about how best to optimize the team you build around Rondo, assuming you go with Rondo (as Danny appears to have chosen to do).

At this point the arguments against Rondo have pretty much devolved to "there is no guarantee that Rondo will lead us to  a championship, there for he is terribleand get rid of him!"  Of course, as the Lakers discovered last year, there is no such thing as  a guaranteed championship, unless you are the Heat and you are run by Bob Riley, whose goons have Don Sterni covered, though everyone is still pretending he is the Boss of Bosses....

The way I see it, we should be able to  discern two things as the season progresses, assuming Rondo does return at some point:  has Rondo  fully recovered and has he rededicated himself on the defensive end.   By their defensive play shall ye know them...

I believe in Rondo, he won't win fans over until he wins a playoff series or two without the Big Three. Even though he won series as the best player in past years.

It will take at least that, C'slife.

No worries Paul. Rondo will show the world. The Celtics may need a superstar to go with Rondo, but not a big 3 is needed.

I hear you, Franklin. I mean Pat Riley, of course, not Bob Riley. I must have combined Bob Ryan with Pat Riley! Usually I just call him Pat Smear. Using his given name must have confused me...

I love to imagine the defensive machine Rondo and Bradley can be...

You're so right pointing out the haters stubborness!! They always hate on Rondo saying that he is stubbon, and it's absolutely true, but it's funny how their own stubborness makes them blind at times..

Rondo needs a big man like Stockton had Malone. With some other parts around.

That would be fantastic. Shaq showed the way.

You put your finger on a funny irony, Morena! They are more stubborn than they claim Rondo is!
