Sullinger issues apology after arrest

Posted by shawn cassidy on September 3, 2013 at 7:40 PM

I don't want to come here and speak about this as if I know what happened. If it's true then, Sully should feel like crap. This isn't the story any of us want to cover. But it's a story. Sully is still a young man, and the bottom line is we don't know. From what's out there, the "rumors" it sounds like Sully made a mistake that will stick with him. I don't like the fact that Sully read off a script. But, when your guilty sometimes it's the only way. Again I won't try to rush to judgement on this, but it seems like he's guilty of something. I'm just overall disappointed.

ESPN Boston

"I voluntarily reported to the Waltham police this morning to respond to charges against me," Sullinger said in the statement. "The experience was humbling and embarrassing for me. Yet I know that this situation has brought both sorrow and embarrassment to my girlfriend, my family, the Boston Celtics organization, my teammates, and my fans. To all of you, I apologize from the bottom of my heart."

Added Sullinger in the statement: "My lawyers have advised me not to discuss the case at this time. But I wanted to immediately and publicly apologize to everyone affected by this situation."

The Boston Celtics released their own statement following the arrest.

"The Celtics were disappointed to learn of the allegations against Jared and are currently gathering more information on the situation, which we are taking very seriously," read the team statement. "We will reserve further comment until such point that we have sufficient additional information."

Sullinger pleaded not guilty to charges of assault and battery, malicious destruction of property and witness intimidation. He was released on $5,000 bail and is scheduled to appear in Waltham District Court again on Sept. 19.

Damn guy! This guy was picked by a few to be team MVP? He's immature.

C'slife, the facts need to be out for me to rush things on how I feel. But very sad if all is true.

I think Cslife hit on something very real here. It shows how crazy some of the Rondo hate is that some fans have been falling all over themselves to praise Sullinger as a team leader, even calling for him to be captain, when clearly all this is so so premature for him.

As for Sully himself, what an awful situation. What actually happened? I don't know. These are very serious charges. Fighteningly serious charges.

Ok, there is a thread at Celtics Blog where tweats from the hearing go into a lot of detail. It sounds like the prosecutors are on a crusade here. Sullinger's gf did not ask for a 'stay away' order, but the prosecutor and judge insisted on it. At the same time, it does sound like a quarrel happened where Sullinger's behavior was far beyond acceptable conflict behavior. It seems he pinned her, pushed her, destroyed her phone when she tried to call for help, and prevented her from leaving when she tried to leave. Take all that together and maybe the court isn't wrong to insist on a stay away order. Hard to say without knowing more.

But how crazy is it that some folks were calling for him to be the captain and not Rondo, or instead of Rondo?

Very sad situation, but human. We all have a lot to learn about treating each other better - and it starts at the national level if you ask me.
