Celtics Morning Joe: Why?

Posted by shawn cassidy on August 20, 2013 at 5:00 AM

I don't want to call someones article silly or pointless. But, I have to say SB nations top 100 of 2017 is silly, and pointless. It seems like any top anything lists are pretty pointless. They're good for debates, or arguments. As some of you may know by now. SB nation ranked Rondo 34th in 2017. The ranking leaves Rondo 9th or so on the list of point guards.

Top 100 of 2017, 31-40: The forgotten titans-SBNATION

I've long ago given up ranking Rondo by conventional measures. He's been the best player on the court in playoff games with certain Hall of Famers and verified All-Timers, and he's disappeared at other times. My biggest concern is his lack of a consistent jumper as he ages, especially coming off an ACL injury that could begin to erode his dynamic first step. There's also the fact that Celtics' offenses have ranked obscenely low with him running the show.

Still, I can't get past the Wilt/Oscar stat lines when the lights shine brightest. He'll either be the most awesomely weird player in his early 30s or a sad shadow of his former self. I'm betting on the former. -FLANNERY

Flannery does have some points. I think his first sentence tells the story."I've long ago given up ranking Rondo by conventional measures". I have come to the point where I'm done fighting these lists that mean nothing. Especially this Nostradamus article by SB nation.

Nostradamus article - lol!

The 'knowledgeable ones' talk about Rondo the same way similar types in football used to talk about Doug Flutie. If Flutie had success, they talked about 'pixie dust'. It could never be that he was a great player. Never that. No matter what, they harped endlessly on his shortcomings. All this is how they talk about Rondo. Look at what Flannery says here. "Awesomely weird". Pixie dust.

And the thing is, all this stuff does have an affect on someone's career. It certainly did on Flutie's career, and it does on Rondo's too. Players read that stuff. They hear it. Every team Flutie had treated him like some kind of weirdo, and basically waited for him to screw up. You see that with Rondo too. How do you lead when your teammates and coaches are all looking at you that way, and everytime you turn on the tv or look at a paper or look at an online discussion you have to see your talent ridiculed, your achievements attributed to others, your weaknesses magnified? It creates a paranoia that is hard to overcome. Flutie became a bitter old man prematurely, and this in turn wrecked his only real opportunity in San Diego, late in his career. I would hate to see this happen to Rondo. I'd hate to see him embittered, but I wonder how he can avoid it at this point? What would he have to do to win his critics over? What does he have to do to win his teammates over? To win his coach over? They all see and hear the same stuff, and it's like a stream that never stops flowing.

Flannery doesn't even mention the possibility that Rondo could establish himself as consistently one of the best players in the league. It's not even a possibility for Flannery. For him, the possibilities run from weirdo to failure. If I were Rondo, I'd have a hard time dealing with the guy next time I saw him, and then the whole rut would run deeper, of course.

I know Paul, he can't even imagine Rondo being special. He's just like "Rondo will be the weird guy looking at you from behind like Chris Bosh" I say Chris Bosh because of his weird photo bombs. Flannery wants to see Rondo be a sideshow.

And to make it weirder, just read and compare some of the nauseating fanboy stuff Flannery writes about KG. When he writes about KG he sounds like a groupie. 'KG looked at me from across the room, and our eyes met, for just a moment, and my legs turned to water, and my heart fluttered!' It's romance novel level stuff.

LOL. OH MAN! The night became warm after the look he gave me. The light on his skin reminded me of beauty that has never been etched on stone. lol

So funny Franklin - I must say, you should write romance novels!

I agree with both of you guys.. this is sickening!!
As greg said, I'd rather see Rondo as special than weird; because that's exactly what he is.
And no one should have the right to ruin this.
Sometimes I wonder if the Celtics can't stop this. I mean, I understand the freedom of speech and everything else, but isn't there anything you can do to protect your best player?

I think Doc could have stopped some of it if he had taken a stand last year when there was the absurd controversey over the assist streak - you couldn't have had a better example of the media taking an accomplishment that should have been appreciated and twisting it into some sort of final
'proof' of Rondo's awfulness.
