Rondology: Will The Real Leader Please Stand Up?

Posted by paul on January 4, 2013 at 9:00 AM

It was great to see that Rondo forthrightly took responsibility for the team's woes, and even pointed to his lack of commitment to pressuring his man on D as a key factor.   This is precisely what you want from a leader.    Wouldn't you know that Doc steps up and declares that Rondo's not the leader!  How often have we heard, and from Doc himself in one way or another, that this is Rondo's team?

How often have we seen Doc contradict himself?  Now, to be fair, Doc usually couches his statements so carefully that he probably never exactly contradicts himself.  Sure.  But one day this is Rondo's team.  The next day it's KG's team.  The next day it's Paul's team.  The next day it's the owners' team and none of the players have any right taking ownership.  Does this guy ever stop trying to feed a line into someone's ear to butter them up or placate them?  One day we hear that the offense depends on Rondo.  The next day we hear that the offense depends on Paul.  One day we hear that The Streak is great and puts Rondo in amazing company (which yeah, it did).  The next day we hear that Doc doesn't care about it, never heard of it, and doesn't care for it.

So now Rondo isn't the leader, according to Doc.  KG is.  Tomorrow he'll be telling us a different story.

On one level, some of the confusion is understandable.  The comparison that I came up with is Star Wars.   Sometimes, when you think about Star Wars, it's hard to say exactly who the leader is.  Ostensibly, maybe it's Luke.  But Luke is very young, and he's not exactly a charismatic personality, and he's like a little dog always trying too hard sometimes.  So there's Ford.  Ford is always the guy who gets stuff done.  He's crafty, smart, knows his way around, and constantly steals Luke's girls.  Clearly he's the leader, right?  Or is it Obi Wan?  Obi Wan is the most powerful, in a way.  He's the one everyone listens to.  He's the one everyone respects.  He's the planner.  He's the one the others turn to when things get tough.  Take him away and Han is just a jerk, while Luke is just a dreamy kid.

Obviously, Rondo is like Luke,  Paul Pierce is like Han Solo and KG  is like Obi Wan.

But, in the end, it's always Luke.  Luke is the one the story coalesces around, and when you think about it, he has to be.  Mark Hamill's acting job as Luke is so massively underrated.  He makes us believe that Luke is this shy, gawky, social misfit, who is a loser with the girls, loses his fights, and likes nothing better than tinkering in the shop by himself...  but that hidden inside him is an wealth of talent, and a vision for a better world, and a conscience that is pure, and true, and large enough for the universe.  Luke is like Frodo in Lord of the Rings.  There KG is Gandalf, and Pierce is Strider.  Like Frodo, Luke  doesn't impress anyone.  But somehow, he is at the center of all the action.  Even when he's not there, he's there.  He touches people where they believe.

So KG is the center of the Celtics' gravitas.  Paul Pierce is the swashbuckler.  Rondo?   If Rondo decided he'd rather piddle around with his robots, and his cross four, rather than take on the evil empire against the odds,  we'd have no story to tell...

I love the Star Wars comparison!! It fits perfectly!!
As you said, Rondo is Luke, and in the and, it's always about Luke.
I love the last sentence: "rather than take on the evil empire against the odds, we'd have no story to tell".
This is the situation of the team right now. If Rondo doesn't understand how to make the team go, our season will be a complete nothing.
And Doc isn't helping him that much saying he's not the leader. It looks like Rondo is already a little confused about his role, he doesn't need someone telling him different things everyday..

Lol!! This is great!!
I usually like Doc because he was able to build a strong relationship with Rondo even when young Rondo was being difficult. But today's comment scares me.

Like everyone, Doc has his ups and downs. Hopefully he'll rise to the occasion too. But Doc needs to get with it that Rondo is this team's leader, and he needs help living up to it, rather than mixed signals.

You said it so well, Morena. Rondo seems confused enough. It sucks how everytime he responds to the criticism, he gets attacked for that. Watch. If he starts shutting down opposing players, the media will be carving him up for that. Count on it. And Doc will be waffling over that! Or not. Maybe Doc will realize that he needs to stop waffling over Rondo, criticize him when he deserves it - and let's face it, he deserves it plenty, even Rondo groupies see that - but most of all, support him and guide him as he tries to lead this team.

I'll never forget the way the media, led by Darth Ryanus, savaged Rondo for The Streak. What was The Streak, in the end, but Rondo's way of holding himself to a standard of consistency, WHICH IS WHAT EVERYONE WAS HOWLING FOR! It was a great foundation stone for us to build on. Now we got shifting sands for a foundation stone.

But that can be changed with some back to basics leadership!! Starting tonight I hope hope hope....
