"IN RONDO WE TRUST"

Celtics Blog Post New Entry

Johnson growing slowly

Potential, and upside is spoken all to well in basketball. We often never see the potential of others lived out. But it's nice to see when it happens. Most players drafted at number 21 don't live up to superstar status. Of course you'll see players from time to time become stars that are drafted high.

Look at Rajon Rondo. He's the best point guard in the league. Yes I agree with Rondo on that, and he could be one of the best when his career is all said, and done.

From the pool of youngsters on the Celtics. Jared Sullinger to me is a potential star, or key role player for years to come. He was picked 21st, and he slipped for a few reasons as you know. Mainly because of health reasons.

With summer league we get to see guys like Johnson, and Moore from last seasons draft class, and of course  the two first round picks Melo, and Sullinger in this years summer league. It's hard not to get caught up in their potential. ESPN has an article up about Johnson talking about consistency. I think by watching him in summer league, and looking at his stats. It's safe to say, this kid is far from playing major minutes in an NBA game.  His frame alone could pass a decade ago, but in today's NBA when you have small forwards bigger than Johnson. It's hard seeing him play.

Johnson put up six points and five rebounds over 22 minutes as the Celtics ousted the Hawks, 87-69 Tuesday night. In a 79-74 win over Chicago,  Johnson chipped in seven points on 3-of-6 shooting, and grabbed 12 boards.

Johnson was asked about the two games, and he had this to say.

"Just a later game?" Johnson quipped, wearing an expression that suggested he fully understood that Monday's outing can't be the norm for him. "No, I don't know, it's just how it is some days, but obviously I just need to work on being more consistent, on both ends. There's still things I see I can do better, but obviously I'm heading in the right direction. Getting to play is a plus."

I agree nice to see you play Johnson, but look at the talent pool. He's going up against freshly removed  college kids. So I expect more from him actually. I think if you don't get anything after year two in the NBA. I don't think you have a job for long. On the other hand. I see major potential in Moore, and  in Sullinger. I think both players will get playing time this season.

Greg Payne from ESPN had said this of Johnson's struggles.

"While some are expecting Johnson to come through with one of the more accomplished game logs over the course of this summer slate, he still has hurdles he's steadily trying to work over. With game minutes and practice time so limited last season due to the NBA lockout and the Celtics' injury woes, Johnson hasn't had the chance to play routinely at a high level for some time."

Okay, maybe I'll give Johnson more time because of the lockout, but even if we do that. I still don't think he can provide any minutes on the floor this season. Johnson seems like a great kid, and some are mad because Danny passed up  on Marshon Brooks for Johnson, maybe it will pay off, but it was a bad move so far.

I wish Johnson luck, he is a Celtic. Will he always be a Celtic, who knows, but he puts on that great uniform, so I'll respect him, and his growth.

I think all of us hope, KG gets into him, and maybe he will. We want to see KG teach, and grow with the young guys. Johnson could be one of them, but I think this season Johnson will have to fight over KG's attention. Three young bigs that want KG's love, and  guidance.

It's just one of the many storylines going into this season.

Did anyone notice that Kobe declared the other day that the Celtics had four HOFers when he played them in 2010. I think it's safe to say that he was including Rondo in that.

The greats know the greats, don't they? Meanwhile, the nibblers continue to claim that Rondo isn't even first tier as a pg...

My favorite thing to see Sully and JJJ doing is rebounding.
