Celtics by the numbers: Road trip blues

Posted by shawn cassidy on March 21, 2012 at 11:25 AM

I have changed the idea behind this column. Instead of covering the stats from the last game, because I usually cover the numbers in other posts. I've decided to review the numbers by a stretch of games.

The Celtics give up 90.6 points per game, and that's third best in the  NBA. The C's were ranked number one for about a month, but this road trip has actually raised the points allowed. The Celtics have given up almost 97 points per game, and without the defensive slug fest against the Hawks the C's would be given up a 101 per game. The next two games on the road trip could really go either way for the Celtics. The new look Bucks have a fast, and speedy back court that could run the Celtics out of the building. I thihk this would be the best game for Doc to use Rondo, and Bradley together more often than not. Philly crushed last time, and they have the fire power to beat us big again, and on a second night of a back-to-back.

The Celtics rank 4th in field goal % defense at .426. That was another category the Celtics were ranked number one for a month or so. But so far on this road trip they have given up 46% from the field.

How about the horrible rebounding. The Celtics rank last with 39 boards a game, and they give up 43 a game, and that ranks 9th in the league. During this trip the Celtics have been out rebounded 26-193. The Celtics have averaged 32 boards a game, and that's seven below their season average, and they have given up 43 boards a game right at their season average. The Celtics only out rebounded the Warriors so far on this trip.

The Celtics average 15 turnovers a game, and that ranks 11th in the NBA. The Celtics rank 6th on forced turnovers with 16 a game. The problem is that they don't score enough off turnovers. The Celtics forced 107 turnovers total, and an average of 18 a game. The Celtics gave up the ball 96 times, and averaged 16 turnovers in the process.

So their are some key stats from the road trip. The Celtics need to clean up the turnovers, and close the gap on rebounding,or this team will be bounced in the first round of the playoffs.
