Rondo, Celtics Grind Out Statement Win VS Bulls, 95-91

Posted by paul on February 12, 2012 at 6:05 PM

Rondo wasn't the only one who had a breakout game tonight.  Johnson and Wilcox  had big games too despite being hounded by the refs with fouls.   The Celtics had every reason to lose tonight, going up against the best rebounding team in the league with our second and third best Bigs down, but other guys stepped up.  Even Stiemsma gave us some good minutes and  a big block.  JJJ had 13 points and was huge in the fourth quarter, as was Wilcox, who also gave us 9 rebounds.  Incredibly we outrebounded the Bulls today.  We did lose the offensive boards, 8-15, and that hurt us all night long.  Kevin Garnett had a big game, giving us 12 points on 5-8 shooting, and 12 rebounds.  Allen and Pierce had rough  games, but still came through in the early fourth quarter with key buckets.   As a team we only had 24 assists tonight;   we'd like to be closer to 30.

And it can't be said that Rajon Rondo had a perfect game tonight.  His opposite number scored 22 points, and went wild down the stretch, when the Bulls appeared to take advantage of the badly winded Rondo, stripping him of the ball several times in traps.    But wow.  Rarely has one player come as close to winning a game by himself, I think.  Rondo didn't have one of those triple doubles where he just barely slipped over the threshold.  He blew the doors of the threshold tonight, giving us 32 points, 15 assists and ten rebounds, all his highs for the season I believe (he may have had more rebounds in a game).   More importantly, this was a hard fought game, and it was Rondo who rose to the occasion again and again and again, finally nailing down the win at the very end with four straight free throws.

This was the Rondo we have been calling for.  Doc did a great job of not resting Rondo so long that he cooled off.   Now the next step is for Ray Ray and PP to play off Rondo.  We need Rondo attacking this way every night, leading our attack and breaking down the offense, then putting some of that energy into the passing game.

And tonight we finally saw JJJ and Wilcox out running with Rondo!!!  Could it be that we are finally starting to have a real fast break attack?!!

Can and will Rondo keep this up?   And will Ray and Paul get in on the action?

This was such an exciting game. Is this the beginning of a new era?

It must feel good for Rondo. I don't care that Rose didn't play. The Bulls defense can win them games without him. The Celtics wanted to win this even if Rose played. I hope this is what the team spoke of. Let Rondo run this ship.

The guys at Celtic.com said that Chicago is 5-1 without Rose, so this was no cheap win. I am concerned about Ray Ray's and Paul's struggles. These guys really need to figure out that they can feast off Rondo's energy. Imagine Rondo breaking down the defense, and then passing off to cutting Paul or Ray sitting on the 3 point arc. I'm concerned about Watson's 22 points, but I think Rondo got tired.

It's amazing to watch defenses chase him when he attacks - why wouldn't we make the most of the way this breaks down defenses?

That was my favorite thing all day. He's often been a little afraid in the clutch. I think he took a big step forward today hitting those.

I think he played down to Watson. It was maybe the stratagey of the Celtics.

One guys says anyone could dominate Watson. For God's sake, how often does one see ANYONE dominate a game like Rondo did today? Almost never.

I'm sure they want him traded cause his trade value is higher?

Exactly. It's killing some folks to see this from Rondo. And even some people who get it that Rondo had a monster game are saying they want to see this from him every game, this level of effort and aggression. So would we all, but really, is it ALL Rondo's fault?

INcredibly, people are mad that Rondo didn't smile enough.

What an effing no win situation he's been put in here. Just remember,Rajon, Bill Russell was hated by many fans.

Only one person seemed to get it that even if Rondo is upset, HE HAS DARN GOOD REASON TO BE.
Not all the problems in the locker room are his fault.

this is the type of game where as magic johnson said later ray pp and kevin gotta say ok man you proved it now its your team well step aside and be role players and step up when needed, example that pierce jumper late big shot, in the 4th quarter he looked exhausted clear indication was when he missed a couple layups at the basket that he was making earlier, but hey you miss some you make some. Im also glad he took every jump shot this game with extreme confidence there not all gonna fall you make a few im all but happy.

I get the impression that Magic likes Rajon and sees the situation. Unfortunately, I don't really expect Rondo's teammates to react that way. I saw them basically saying that Rondo rules the transition game and gee whiz, maybe we'll try to get out on the break more, but everything goes back to normal next game, right?

I thought that too - that Rondo's late game problems were due to exhaustion. That makes it even more impressive that he stepped up and hit those free throws the way he did.

Rondo should be leading this team. I suspect the rest of the league can see it, but hardly anyone in Boston can.
