What are Celtic fans thinking: Tanking vs Not Tanking

Posted by shawn cassidy on November 13, 2013 at 4:05 AM

This is another debate that has Celtics nation at odds with each other. For the past 3-4 years it's been about blowing up the team, or sticking with the "Big 3". Now the C's fanbase has a new storyline to fight over. That 4-4 record that the Celtics hold represents the vote between fans. One side wants the Celtics to win, the other side wants every loss that's possible. Everyone wants a stab at the next best thing. This summers draft is supposed to be special. So lets dive into it. It's been awhile since I've posted this article. So the format is to capture comments from other mainstream sites, and some other blogs.

The comments that your about to see are from an article at CSNNE. The post is about tanking, and it's the opions of Tanguay and Felger. Here are the comments made by the two fools.

"What are we doing sharing the basketball. What are we doing winning four straight games when there's a lottery pick to win, Gary?" Felger asked.

"And you know what else, Mike? They're playing defense," Tanguay responded. "This is the NBA. You don't play defense in the NBA when you're trying to win."

The Celtics have been playing a much more team-oriented brand of basketball, and they're also pushing the pace more. That is definitely due to the orders of their coach, Brad Stevens.

"They're coach I think is too good. This is a concern," Felger said. "Brad Stevens is a real concern for me because he seems to know what he's doing, and they're playing for him."

"They hired this guy a year too early," Felger continued. "He might be too good. He cares obviously too much as he should. And he's got them at .500 if the playoffs started today they'd be in the middle of the Eastern Conference pack, again the last place you want to be. This should have been a year of the Bobby Valentine equivalent of the Boston Celtics. Blow it up, tank it, go to the bottom, and then next year you bring in Boy Wonder here, and he does all the right things and you start to build it up next year."

The comments by some of the posters?

Daniel

"They are 100% RIGHT and anyone who disagrees is either uninformed or flat out wrong. best case scenario for this team is an 8th seed where they will get bounced in the first round by the Pacers or Heat. Does ANYBODY want that??? Are we trying to be the Minnesota Timberwolves here? Tank, get a high pick and pick a player in one of the deepest drafts of the last decade.

You cant build it back up unless you completely start from the bottom. Draft your next Pierce and get the train rolling. Remember the 2008 champion Celtics? Were they a moderately good team the year before?...

NO!!! They SUCKED!!! And what did they do? They packaged their pick and young assets and got Allen and KG. THAT is how you win championships in this league. It is a star-based league, and if you dont have stars you lose. Sorry Jeff Green and Rondo aren't gonna singlehandedly raise any banners for us.
"

Another fan disagreed.

Dan M.

"What are these guys talking about?, I hate to see people like these getting well paid to open their mouths and tell crap. They absolutely SUCK!! Draft picks are like lottery tickets and they won't guarantee your team will be the winner next year, or the following. I guess they don't look at all the bad teams like the Magic, the Kings, the Wizards, that almost always stink no matter how high their picks are and won't probably ever win a title in the NBA. I was afraid the celtics were looking to tank the season, but I think Brad Stevens is doing a great job coaching this team and hope he continues doing that!"

I agree with Dan. It is a lottery. We could get screwed again. He's also right. The same teams tend to face the same issues. It's because the owners won't pay, and it's because of the culture. This team has a star in Rondo, and Danny needs to find a way to get him another star. They have most of the cast and characters on the roster now, with a few minor changes that are needed. But I think it's safe to say that the Celtics don't want a season down at the bottom of the leagues worst teams. I do agree with Daniel about the veterans comment. But he doesn't make sense by saying the Celtics need them, because he hopes the C's tank for one of those boy wonders. Make up your mind dude.

I'll be blunt. I'm open to others choices, or ideals. But for any of you fans who want this team to tank. You can just stop reading this blog now. Because you just don't get it.

Tanking builds a losing culture. Why on Earth would anyone want their team to embrace that pathetic mentality? Fight until the end is how we do it.
