Prediction time, how will the Celtics do this year

Posted by shawn cassidy on October 22, 2013 at 5:30 AM

I thought going into the 2013-14 season that the C's still had a chance to make the playoffs as an 8th seed, and maybe even as low as 7th seed in the East. That thought that I had early on hinged on Rondo's return at camp, that didn't happen. The Celtics currently have a 1-6 record in preseason action, and I'm not going to base my decision on that so much, but more on facts. The fact is that Rondo isn't running this team right now, and the Celtics aren't struggling to score so far in the preseason, but I expect they will when the games matter.

Jeff Green has been himself, and you know what I mean by that. I really look to the first month of the season. November is one of the roughest stretches I've seen in years, and I don't know if a young team, with a new coach, can handle the adversity. Let's look at the month of November..

They play the two top teams from last year on the road in November. They'll play the Heat November 9th on a second night of a back-to-back. They'll also play the defending Western Conference champs on the road on a second night of a back-to-back. I think most of us expect a loss. The Celtics will hit the road 11 times including the one and only game in October in Toronto. The Celtics will play at home 8 times in the first month. The C's have 6 back-to-back's in the first month, and that may seem irrelevant with a younger team, but It could matter regardless.

The C's haven't had a big breakout from anyone, they've had some nice games from Sullinger, Wallace, and Olynyk. The Celtics desperately need Rondo, and without him. This team has no chance, and I don't think they have a chance when he comes back. I just don't think they can recover from the hard November. I think the Celtics will start the season 4-15 in the first month, and I'll put Rondo's return date for the first game of December. With that being said, the Celtics will go 32-31 in their last 63 games, if Rondo gets back by the first game in December, and maybe it's a stretch if it's a week or two into December.

That would give the Celtics a 36-46 record, and would likely mean the Celtics would just miss the playoffs in the Eastern Conference. Overall, no matter how many wins the C's finish up with. The Celtics won't see the playoffs this year.
The number of wins that I believe the C's will win is a bit high, and it all rides on Rondo's return, without him this team is a 20-62 at best.

That's a very realistic prediction.
Even though I'm still very excited for the challenge that is ahead of us!!

I think most of us just want to see a young team come together, even with more losses then wins.
