The Celtics have 17 NBA titles,as you know, and they won 16 NBA titles in a 40 year span. The Celtics dominated the 60's and late 50's. They won 11 titles in a 13 year span. The Celtics championship model spanned through the 70's with two titles, and in the 80's with three. We know of the dreaded 22 year drought that hung over the Celtics until they won banner 17 in 2008.
The Celtics arch rival has 16 titles to their name, in which many debate the fact that 5 of those were won in Minneapolis. The Lakers since moving to LA have won 11 titles. The Lakers and Celtics faced off seven times in the 60's with the Celtics winning all seven matchups.
As of 2010, the Lakers and Celtics have met 12 times in the Finals.
To date, Boston has won nine and L.A. three.
|1985||Los Angeles Lakers||4–2|
|1987||Los Angeles Lakers||4–2|
|2010||Los Angeles Lakers||4–3|
A lot of you know all of this, but I wanted to point how the Celtics compare to other great teams in other sports.
The Celtics have won 17 titles in the 68 years that NBA has been around. The Yankee's have 27 World Championships since Major League Baseball formed the World Series in 1903. That's 27 titles for the Yankee's in 110 years. The second most World Series wins is St.Louis with 11. As for the NFL, the Steelers have 6 Super Bowl titles since that format formed in 1966-67. That's 6 titles in a 47 year span.The Cowboys and 49ers have five victories each; and both the Packers and New York Giants have four Super Bowl championships.
The Celtics remarkable 16 titles in 40 years is unmatched by any other pro sports team. The Celtics have the second most titles out of the three major sports, with their rival the Lakers trailing by one. That bugs me! What the Celtics did from the late 50's until the 80's is untouchable. I don't see any franchise challenging what the Celtics pulled off, especially in this age of sports.
