Celtics Title Town

"IN RONDO WE TRUST"

Celtics Blog Post New Entry

Attn: Armchair GMs...CHILL!

Posted by NeCsFan on August 16, 2013 at 1:25 AM

First off, let me preface everything I'm about to write by saying that I do not come from a professional sports city. I live in Nebraska. We live for Husker football. Period. The only heads we ever call to have served up on platter are those of coaches who will never have a team that lives up to the grandeur of Tom Osborne’s teams from the 90's that stomped the competition into the ground on a consistent basis. I say this because as a "newer" Celtics fan, and from following the NBA more closely as an adult, there is an anomaly that completely baffles me. The armchair GM. I get it, sports are entertainment. And to an even greater degree, while I don't live in New England, the pride of Boston sports fans is pretty much common knowledge to anyone who has ever watched anything involving a ball. But, I digress, and in my best Jerry Seinfeld voice ask "what is the deal with all the armchair GMs?"

If I have to listen to Bill Simmons wax poetic about his dream trade one more time I think I might become physically violent. Every time I read a blog post - save for maybe this place - someone is trying to trade "for the future". We should try to get this or that for Rondo. If we package AB and Sully maybe we can get DeMarcus Cousins. I'm confused. For one, how young exactly is a team supposed to get? I keep hearing we need to get younger we need to think about the future...are "we" planning on drafting infants sometime in the near future? When exactly is this team or any team for that matter supposed to develop this crazy thing called chemistry if they keep trading the talent in house for "the future". Secondly, who the hell wants DeMarus Cousins? Maybe I'm being a bit of an armchair GM myself here, but from most accounts that I've heard the guy is an underachieving locker room nightmare. Seeing his name pop up so often in connection with the Celtics before the trade deadline made me sick. Which leads me to point nomero tres, where is the loyalty armchair GMs? I'm not gonna go on a Rondo love spree, but damn, you'd think the guy was a lame horse. I'm just waiting for someone to come out and say "Why don't we just take him out back and put him down. Who's got the shotgun?" Seriously, I’m asking, can anyone explain this to me? Maybe it’s just the summer. Maybe it’s just my heightened awareness. Maybe it’s because I don’t play fantasy basketball, but for the life of me I can’t wrap my head around it. I realize the Celtics don’t have the market cornered on armchair GMs, but c’mon guys, our guys in green are already down. How ‘bout we leave the kicking to the blowhards at ESPN and Bleacher Report.

I agree. We live in this video game, fantasy basketball world. We ask for loyalty, but most fans don't show it.

Who wrote this? This isn't Shawn, is it? Nice piece. It just seems like, for most people, junior high school never ever ends.

Nice piece Nes. I think that a lot of it comes from fantasy sports too.

Thanks for the love guys. I also forgot to ask. Why does everyone get an "era" now? That's the latest thing I keep reading is that the "Fab Melo era is over" Fab Melo had an "era"? That's news to me.

Yeah, I thought the same thing. Everybody who wrote about this elsewhere, called it an era. I want to think they were being sarcastic.

Ha ha - that's a good one too! Heck, Walker didn't get an era, did he? Neither did Cowens, if you listen to folks today...

I'll call it the Rondo Era when Rondo leads the team to a championship without the Big Three. This year, hopefully ... ;!
