I can't say that my heat breaks after this trade. I wasn't in love with his progress so far, and he's a project that didn't show any signs, that's my opinion. Maybe Ainge felt the same way.
The Fab Melo era is over (before it really even began). A handful of lingering thoughts after the Boston Celtics traded the second-year center to the Memphis Grizzlies on Thursday in exchange for the nonguaranteed contract of Donte Green:
Maybe Danny did this move for one reason, and not because he didn't believe in Melo. Greene's $1,027,424 salary for 2013-14 is un-guaranteed. That's huge because Melo's $1,311,240 salary is guaranteed. The Celtics are
currently ~$800,000 over the luxury tax and badly want to get below it.
By making this deal and cutting Greene, they would temporarily get
$500,000 below the tax. This move was cap relief so they don't go over the luxury tax. Smart move by Danny.
