First of all welcome to the Boston Celtics Brad Stevens. I wish you luck, because it only benefits all of us. Brad Stevens was a very successful college hoops coach with Butler. Stevens guided Butler to the national championship game from a mid major conference two years in a row (2010 and 2011). That's impressive stuff, and shouldn't go unnoticed with this hiring. Obviously my initial thought when hearing the news was centered around the fact he was a college coach. I actually didn't mind his age, but I feared the lack of NBA knowledge in his background. It's well known Stevens seems like a guy ahead of his time, and he's very good with the X's and O's of basketball.
Brad is also into the numbers game of basketball. With this coaching move by Ainge. I see Ainge wanting to mold someone, and this is the best time to do so.The Celtics are building this team up again, and they have a young core looking for a fresh voice. I'm working on another post based around Rondo alone, so I'll leave the Rondo stuff for later.
I believe Danny is looking for a long term coach, but in a way it feels like it could be short term if Steven's doesn't pick up the NBA game. Stevens is 36, and if this all works out with the Celtics becoming the model franchise once again. We could very well see the next Pop or Jerry Sloan. Something that Ainge wants with his head coach.Danny had this brief statement about the hiring.
"Brad and I share a lot of the same values. Though he is young, I see Brad as a great leader who leads with impeccable character and a strong work ethic. His teams always play hard and execute on both ends of the court. Brad is a coach who has already enjoyed lots of success, and I look forward to working with him towards Banner 18."
In the world we live in today. Everyone wants the biggest and the best. When Doc Rivers departed the obvious questions was who can coach the Celtics. Everyone thought the next coach could be George Karl, or even Lionel Hollins. Sometimes less is more. Sometimes a person needs a chance. This guy is a kid for some fans, and for some he could be their age or an older brother type. Stevens is a low risk high reward move. I'll leave at that for now.
