2013 NBA Finals: Spurs take game 1 92-88

Posted by shawn cassidy on June 6, 2013 at 11:50 PM

The Spurs took the lead  from Miami in the 4th quarter, and they never looked back. Tony Parker hit a jumper with tenths of a second remaining on the shot clock to give the Spurs a 92-88 lead with 5.5 to go in the 4th. The Spurs executed beautifully against the Heat. The Spurs showed some rust, but when it came to the 4th quarter the Spurs out scored the Heat 23-16 with zero turnovers. The Spurs set a NBA Finals record with just 4 turnovers. When I say rust for the Spurs. I'm talking about the wide open three's that wouldn't go down. If they hit a few more the Spurs win this by ten.

Duncan had 20 points, 14 rebounds and three blocks. He had a slow start but he hit two key free throws in the 4th that kept the Spurs at bay. Manu scored 13 points for the Spurs, and he seemed to hit shots when the Spurs needed him to. He did have an awful three in the 4th that I'm sure he wished he had back.

James had 18 points, 18 rebounds and 10 assists for his 10th career playoff triple-double. James and Wade in the 4th only scored 6 points.Wade scored 17 for the game. Back to James for a moment. He had his lowest scoring total so far in the playoffs, and he improves to 0-5 against the Spurs in the NBA Finals.

The good thing about this for non Heat fans? The Spurs won't get to high or low. They've been there down that. They're not overwhelmed with the spotlight or the Heat.

Key stats

  • Points in the paint: Spurs 40 Heat 34
  • Rebounds: Heat 46 Spurs 37
  • Turnovers: Spurs 4 Heat 8
  • Field Goal %: Heat 43.6% Spurs 41.7%
  • Bench points: Heat 30 Spurs 22
  • 3's made: Heat 8 Spurs 7

The Spurs didn't play their best game, but did the Heat? They out rebounded the Spurs which they probably have no business doing, and they limited them in the paint. The Heat's bench played soundly as well. The Heat need Bosh to score more than 13, and to stop taking three's. I think Bosh is an outside the paint guy now, and the Heat won't win without an inside presence. The Heat were successful with James in the post in game three of the Pacers series. But in the NBA Finals I don't know if the Heat will win that way.

so happy, though i thought we'd see Rondo taking the Heat apart in the playoffs this year, not Parker!

This gives me hope. Rondo is the key still. If the Spurs win this. The Heat will shake thay ubeatable label that everyone has given them.

If rondo can slowly build his midrange year by year like how tony parker did i'll be really happy.

He really is on his way to do it. Rondo is what... 27 now? And Parker is 30 or 31 I believe. Oh yeah, you bet Rondo should have a killer mid range game by then.

Yeah rondo has been building his midrange year by year but as a fan I just wish it would all come in one year. But i've definetly noticed the strides he's made in his jumper and I hope with his injury he works on it even more because with that in his game he'll truly be unstoppable.

Rondo is probably watching this and thinking he can do this next year. I think rehabbing will make him work even harder on his game.
