Celtics Blog Post New Entry

What KG told Doc "He told me he loved me and I told him I loved him."

This photo is from 2008. I always remember that back and forth between Doc and KG on the Celtics 2008 Championship DVD. The video is below, and if you don't feel like watching the entire clip it starts around the 6 minute mark.

You need Adobe Flash Player to view this content.

I love how we see the relationship between Doc and KG in year one. Doc is quoted that he says that every coach should be able to coach KG for one game, something along those lines. KG, and Doc have something special, just because Kevin hasn't been here since day one like Pierce, it doesn't takeaway the bond they share.

Doc on convo w/ KG: "He told me he loved me and I told him I loved him. Kevin always checks on me and he wanted to know if I'm OK."

This series loss has moved this franchise one step closer to the end of this hard fought  era. Last season it felt like it was the end when the Heat rallied from a 3-2 series deficit. It felt like the Celtics let go of their final shot, and perhaps they have with KG and Pierce. We've heard of the three year plan, and were in year 6 you could say. The Celtics won't fall off the face of the earth. If this era ends the Celtics will have cap space, and they'll have the best point guard when he's playing, and the Celtics have Jeff Green who's shown us that he's a big time player, and he shouldn't shy away from making an all-star team next season.Plus Bradley and Sully.

I'm moving away from the true nature of this post. Doc is a  friend,  and a rock for those players who want to listen. He feels like a father, in times of need, never judging, always there. Doc has done a beautiful job with KG for the past 6 years. It hasn't been easy. Kevin has been closely watched since day one, and even more  when he went down on one cooled night in Utah in 2009.

A bond of friendship is an unwritten, and an undocumented contract that requires words that have deep meaning. I see Doc and Kevin more as friends. Doc is a superior to KG,but in the game of basketball it can be different from most jobs. Doc is a coach first and a great friend second.  Trust was developed early with these two, and honesty is what makes KG,and Doc get along so well. They won't bullshit each other.  Loyalty has made KG. From his days in Sota, and until now, when he puts on the green and white.

Both  have love for the game, and for the franchise, and for each other. They have built a relationship that Red,and Russ built decades before. I think I've done my job in the past two years when it comes to  talking about the end, and  all of that. I won't go into it. We know what will be missing. Hopefully KG and Doc's strong relationship evolves with Doc and Rondo for the next era of Celtics basketball. Rondo has it in,and I think KG was a great influence on him,and all of us. If you noticed, KG got the bigger standing ovation after Doc pulled him in game 6.

Doc and Rondo need to have a relationship that is like co-coaches in some ways. It could be tough for them to work out.
