All-Star Saturday night not the same

Posted by shawn cassidy on February 17, 2013 at 12:05 AM

Grabbing a blank VHS, and ripping it open like it was Christmas morning. I can remember playing basketball all day in the freezing snow. The ball slipping out of my hands, and I wasn't shooting the way I normally do because of the wind, and cold, but fun nonetheless. It was the dead of winter, and I waited for this weekend. Every weekend when your kid is special in one way or another. But watching players, and athletes perform their specialty skill is an art. I would use that blank VHS tape to record All-Star weekend, and it's a tradition I have to this day. I started in 1994, and I've never stopped since. Technology has changed, and now I record All-Star weekend on DVD's.

What else has changed? The joy of All-Star Saturday night. I can remember watching the tapes over, and over again until my brothers would roll their eyes at me. Can't you watch anything else they would say. But I wanted to watch the great shooters, and I wanted to ensure I was shooting the ball correctly. What's bugged me about All-Star weekend has been the inconsistency with programing. They keep changing things up, and this season to spice things up they pegged East vs West. It did nothing for me. I miss the days when the three-point contest was three rounds with 8 players. I think All-Star weekend entertains me until we hit the Dunk contest. When it comes to that I feel like I'm watching Carrot Top performing a stand up set.

People want the stars, and I think that's part of it. But I also think it's the NBA's doing that the weekend has lost it's luster a bit. Like I said the inconsistency with the contests over the years has turned some fans off. I think having the Skills challenge, and Shooting stars has been great. But they had games like Horse, and 2Ball through the years. I think they fill three hours with commercials, and too much time with other crap.I think more rounds to the contests would help, or more games like Horse would fill some time.

The star power in the dunk contest seems to be missing without a doubt. I think Charles said it best during the dunk contest.

Charles Barkley: "We got to seriously work on this slam dunk contest..I'm sick of it."

Charles Barkley: "If I were at home, I'd be popping in the second season of Homeland."

I think they save the dunk contest for last because it once was the best thing about Saturday Night. Now it's a bunch of young guys who miss 10 dunks in a row in a two minute frame. Plus after they  finally perform the dunk it's an okay dunk. I know I can turn it off, but I love this game, and just like the Celtics if their down 20. I'll watch it until the end. But the league may need to revamp, or like they did in the late 90's. They need to get rid of the  dunk contest. Lebron should want to help the league. What's going to hurt James, and honestly a lot of other guys. Why couldn't Jeff Green dunk next season? I know many feel the same way, or maybe I'm just to critical, but it's not the same, and sometimes less is more, and I think the NBA needs to fix the dunk contest.

The dunk contest definetly needs better people and probably a limit of 3 attempts the whole 1 min + is annoying. These guys should have the dunks they're going to do practiced and not miss 5 times. I also believe the 3pt contest could have more contestants and more then 2 rounds. I loved the weekend when they had horse and rondo and durant were in the finals that'd be pretty cool to see what someone like kobe or dirk would do in a game of horse. Not to mention in the real game they arent gonna really start playing until 5 minutes is left in the game and most of the time one team is up 20 points.

The horse game was awesome. One year of that wasn't enough. I agree on the dunk contest ideas as well. It dragged on longer than it should have.

Not enough stars, so they try to fill it up with gimmicks.
