Celtics Win Triple Overtime Thriller Against Denver, 118-114

Posted by paul on February 10, 2013 at 8:20 PM

The Celtics are an elite team.   Championship material.   They've won tough games against good teams.  They've handled teams they should beat.  And they've pulled out unncessarily tough wins too.  Tonight was a tough game against one of the best teams in the league.  Denver seems a lot like us.  Active.  Small.  Smart, tough guards.

For once Avery Bradley got torched.  I wonder if Rondo will tweet something about how Ty Lawson would never go off on him the way Lawson did on Bradley?  Of course not.  Not only would Rondo never do such a thing, but if he did do such a thing, he'd get raked over the coals for it.  Bradley did have a good game himself though.  Lee had a tough game.  Terry more than made up for it, with 26 points.   Terry struggled in the overtimes, but made up for it at the end with a huge three and a huge steal.   Nice to see that the Jason Terry we thought we'd have this summer finally showed up.  It's heartwarming, isn't it, Rajon?

Denver seemed to work a two pg lineup with Miller and Lawson at times.  Nice way to counter the C's honey badger lineup of Bradley and Lee.  Even so, the Celtics defense managed to gain control over Lawson, at least, as the overtimes wore on.

Green hit two super-clutch jumpers, and a huge hook in the second overtime, and came through with clutch rebounds and steals, and even a big assist to Pierce in the second overtime to tie the game with five seconds to go.  Nice.  Coulda used that before this season, but late is better than never, Jeff.  You were right all along.  Rondo shoulda just handed you the ball like the superstar you are.   You were right to wait him out.

Denver crushed the Celtics on the boards. Bass, in particular, didn't provide much there, or anywhere.  Paul Pierce had another monster game, with a triple double.  Amazingly, he managed not to drop the ball out of bounds or get caught in a trap with the game on the line.  It's a miracle.  KG had trouble with his shot, but rebounded well, and made huge baskets down the stretch to win the game.  Rivers did a nice job giving him a breather early in the second overtime.  Gallinari was the monster late in the game for Denver.

The thing is, this is the team we thought we'd see when this team was put together this summer.  Sorry if I sound bitter when writing about them.  It will probably be that way for a while, I'm afraid.   They should have played this way when Rondo was here.  I'm glad they are playing well now, but there's no excuse for the crap they were shoveling for half a season.

That said, I wish Rondo would learn something from the way this team is playing without him.  They are tough.  They play hard all game.  They grind it out on defense, starting with the guards.  Still, tonight you could say that Denver's guards probably outplayed the Celtics' guards, and so you could actually make a case that the Cs could have used Rondo tonight, provided Rondo was willing to play hard on both ends all night the way the rest of the team is doing.

Also unusual, as of late;  Denver's bench outplayed the Celtics' bench.

Fantastic win for the Celtics.  No question about it;  this team can write its own destiny.

Great win and great words from Rondo:

Rajon Rondo to Max during the third quarter break..."I feel great. I'll be back sooner rather than later." #HisWordsNotOurs

Rondo please come back to reality! It's got to be killing him that the team played like shiz for the first three months of the season.

Great post and great win
But I'm everyday more mad at our team, though.

C'sLife, I do wonder if the Docs have given Rondo an option to try to exercise and rest it to healing. I think Terry said Rondo has been working out. I so agree, it has to be just killing him.

I feel that way too, Morena! I've split into two people! One loves what this team is doing and one hates it!

Great post. Win was good, but I agree with some that have mentioned that Avery should had boxed out on the last possession. If he had, they would have won in regulation. Yeah Lawson torched him pretty badly this game, but all these are great lessons for AB, especially moving forward.

I'm just bitter enough though that i'd love to see Rondo taunt Bradley on Twitter. Ok, not really, but part of me would love to see it...
