Celtics Morning Joe: As Rondo gets better the Celtics become worse

Posted by shawn cassidy on January 26, 2013 at 6:00 AM

Rondo had another triple-double. Rajon Rondo posted his second triple-double in a row, finishing with 16 points, 11 assists and 10 rebounds over 40 minutes. Rondo has become the Rondo that is needed, and in return the Celtics continue to fall down. The Celtics are desperate. Maybe a win this Sunday in Allen's return would be the turning the point this season. The Celtics win 6, and lost 6 in a row. Just weird guys. Figuring out what's wrong with the Celtics is easier said, than actually done.

What's right these days is  superstar Rondo. He's become the one guy you can count on. It wasn't the case a few weeks back. But when the Celtics need Rondo the most . The other guys haven't brought it. The media loves the chance to pick on Rondo. He's not Paul Pierce, and he's not KG. So lets pick on the young guy who's not a kiss ass.

CSN.COM

"To me, Rondo's performance last night just makes it further apparent to me that he's a part of the problem," said Mazz. "It's a national TV game and the Knicks, and so he gets a triple-double... There was a point [the Celtics] got on a defensive switch and [Rondo] ended up with Stoudemire I think, under the basket, and you know what he did? He bodied up against [Stoudemire], he fronted him and he played defense. He played defense. Rondo. Amazing isn't it? The guy's capable of playing defense when he wants to, when the game's on national TV, and it's someone relevant or he ends up matched up on a big guy. Hey what do you know? It's actually there."

Rondo is pegged as the leader, and the media can't wait to attack. Nobody seems to focus on Paul's fall in the past month. Pierce looks like a guy who shouldn't even start. I may have "In Rondo we trust" But I love Pierce, and Rondo the same. They both are my favorite guys. For different reasons. Paul was the ray of hope for so many years, and he was everyone's favorite. Rondo came along, and he changed the way I feel about basketball again. But when I watch Pierce play now. I cringe. He plays like he's the Paul of 2008, and he's not. The media gives Paul free passes, and I hate it. Rondo's gretness this season has been counter acted by Paul's lack of everything.

Rondo won't shake the haters. It's like Lebron dealing with the world. But Rondo's critics live in Boston. Nothing is good enough.

Yeah, it's really quite fascinating that everything good Rondo does gets picked apart as yet more proof of how awful he is! Assist streak? Proves Rondo is selfish. Triple Double streak? Proves you can't build around Rondo.

Rondo has a ways to go to be the leader we really need. As Scal pointed out, he doesn't have the ability that Kidd and KG seem to have to change a team's culture, and too often this season we've seen opposing pgs have career games against Rondo. Part of the problem there, though, is our total lack of power on the interior, and to talk about that we have to talk about The Trade, which everyone says we shouldn't talk about...!!!

What I wish for right now is for this team to just compete every game and not get blown out. I wish for Rondo to keep asserting himself, keep growing as a leader. I wish for Ainge to make a firm decision to build around Rondo, and to make no panic moves that don't contribute to that. I wish for Rondo to play tougher D more consistently.

I wish for Rondo to cancel his arrangments with Red Bull. Yeah, it may in fact be time to start thinking about the off season, and I think the single most important thing is that Rondo tell Red Bull to go away. He needs to focus on his game 100% this summer, and he and Doc need to spend major time together redesigning this team's offense. This season has been all about the ghost of Ray Allen. The way to exorcise that ghost is to redesign the offense, and Rondo needs to play the central role in that.

It may be time to start Green and Sully. We may get beaten up savagely the rest of the way, but it may be time to throw the youngones into the fire.

I agree with both of you guys.
It's clear now that we're really far away from what we expected this summer.
Rondo need to focus on how to keep getting better, as a leader and as a player.
I feel for him because he's really trying to do whatever he can but nothing seems to work right now. And that's something that I don't understand.
Rondo is probably the best player in the league at getting the best out of his teammates. How is it possible that, even if he's playing so well, the other guys can't keep going?

Well i think what he said about rondo playing defense when he wants to is absolutely true. I think all of the scrutiny about rondo is coming because rondo's supposed to be in his prime and he's supposed to be giving full effort on both ends nightly. Pierce is getting up there in age and we can't expect him to play at a very high level consistently so as pierce is in the midst of a bad stretch i think people are shrugging it off due to age. Four years ago when rondo was playing inconsistent and was 22-23 yrs old people weren't coming for his neck how they are now because that was to be expected from a young player not a player that proclaims and is arguably the best player at his position

It's really strange. There are weird dynamics going on that we don't know about. Look at Bradley stabbing Rondo on the back on Twitter. You can be sure there is a well of poison which that little jet of poison came from.

But the criticism is going way beyond that, and too, people never did give Rondo a break that I recall. But the criticism of Rondo is massively over the top.

You're right.
So, what Rondo said after the Piston loss is true. Until guys gets sick and fed up with losing, there's no way we're gonna turn the season around. They're just not following his lead.

Since I've started following the Celtics, Rondo as been heavily criticized by the media, but this year it's crazy!! He get absolutely screwed even when he has triple double!!

Morena, I tink that leadership in sports is like leadership in any area of life; it's not easily to become a leader, or to be accepted as a leader, and as soon as one is accepted, the backlash comes. But Rondo makes it harder by not leading the way with consistently tough D

The better he does, the madder folks seem to be! Another thing is that folks seem to say that he was given the key to the car and now he's a total failure -- after three months?!! I understand some of the frustration, but not the sheer vitriol.

Now that they can no more say "he can't shoot" they pick him apart for everything else!!

Agree, that's something he really needs to work on.
This year he has become more consistent in other areas of the game, but sure not on D!!
