Celtics by the Numbers: offensive rebounding disaster

Posted by shawn cassidy on November 16, 2012 at 7:00 AM

It was hard to watch Thursday night when the Nets grabbed 15 offensive rebounds in the first half in Brooklyn. The Celtics fixed the issue, and limited the Nets to just 3 in the second half. The Nets, and Jazz grabbed a total of 18 offensive rebounds each.

Boston as a team grabs a league low 6 offensive rebounds, and they're two behind the 29th team in the league. The Celtics may set a record for team low in offensive rebounding. The issues were fixed when the Celtics went into the second half Thursday night. They just simply boxed guys out. They didn't run in  a different direction. Courtney got the message, and he attacked on the offensive glass, and defensive glass.

Teams 1-13 in the league rebound at least 12 offensive rebounds per game. The Celtics have the same issue, and they need to focus on what they did in the second half of the Nets game.

Some other numbers?

The Celtics surprisingly  lost the glass by just three boards 47-44. Lee seemed to take over Rondo's role on the glass, and when Rondo comes back. I want the same effort from Lee. The Celtics only allowed 36 points in the paint, which has been one of the lowest totals all year for an opposing team. The Celtics only gave up 5 fast break points which is good without Rondo leading the defense.

It's just frustrating that these guys can't/won't do something basic like boxing out.

They did an awesome job in the second half, but in the first half it was a clinic for the Nets. Red would have been so mad if he was around to see this.

It was awful to watch, Doc had saild somethihg like they should be down a zillion points after giving up that many offensive rebounds. He was right. The Celtics almost won because they stopped the Nets. But Rondo was needed to carry the game after KG,and Pierce got a little tired.Doc should have given KG a few minutes in the 4th on a back-to-back.

And he'd hate the disappearance of big men in the NBA and on the Cs. For goodness sake, how does KG, who prefers mixing it up with guards on the perimeter, and was playing point at one point in the fourth quarter (!!!) teach guys like Sully how to bang down low? For goodness sake, bring in a real big man to do some teaching. I love KG, but he's just not that. He has said it himself.

Why can't our Big Three guys get spot rest?

Would we be less tired if we stay and fight for rebounds or sprint down court to play defense?

I think it's a balance. But what we do is just turn tail and run as soon as the shot goes up - and half the time the other team beats us back anyway!!
