Numerology is any study of the purported divine, mystical or other special relationship between a count or measurement and observed or perceived events. The term numerologist is also used derogatorily for those perceived to place excess faith in numerical patterns. I'm not a man who follows numeoroloy, but I was looking at a Celtics championship banner, and I noticed something. I'm sure I've noticed before, but today it came to me.
With the Celtics putting together maybe their deepest team in five years, and maybe this team is even deeper than 2008's? But the pattern of five comes to mind. The Celtics had one their final championship in the Bill Russell era in 1969. The next Celtics championship would come when the hustling big man, beat out the legend Kareem. Dave Cowens, and others helped the Celtics regain the title five seasons later when they won the 1974 championship. The Celtics would win their second title in the Cowens era in 1976.
After the 1976 title the Celtics hit some bumps in the road. Havlicek was retiring, and the team was changing. The Celtics would enter 1978 with the 6th pick in the 1978 draft. The Boston Celtics selected the 6'9", 220-pound Bird 6th overall in the 1978 NBA Draft, even though they were uncertain whether he would enter the NBA or remain at Indiana State to play his senior season. Bird ultimately decided to play his final college season, but the Celtics retained their exclusive right to sign him until the 1979 NBA Draft.
The Celtics would win their 14th NBA championship in 1981. Five years after they won banner 13. What happened next would change this numerology theory right out the window right? Well, after winning the 16th NBA title, the Celtics would go 22 years until they won banner 17 in 2008. But like I said, with the Celtics reloading. The 2013 season could restore the math. We sit on the 5th year, and the Celtics have a chance to win banner 18. Maybe a bigger chance than last years team.
With the Celtics franchise, it's all about mystique, and legend, plus leprechauns. So maybe the number system isn't so crazy.
