Question of the day: Trade or keep the picks?

Posted by shawn cassidy on June 25, 2012 at 11:30 AM

Danny has played his hand well some years in the NBA draft, and some years it's been disappointing. This season the Celtics have two picks that they could either trade, which in a way I hope they do. Package them in a draft night deal to land Josh Smith or something? Danny Ferry just took over the Hawks. He likes to destroy teams, so here is his chance. That's not a real option of course at this time. But a deal that could impact the Celtics could be dealing the two picks. I don't think Danny should move the picks for broken down guys like Jermaine O'neal, but some youthful veterans, or a youthful veteran.

Ainge in the last two drafts has struck a nice chord. Moore looks like a pro, and Bradley has become a pro. Johnson has yet to show the world what he has, but I like the potential. Ainge has had  some crappers. Gabe Pruitt, and Jr Giddens. Don't forget Marcus  Banks. So what should Danny do with the picks? Trade them, or trade up in the draft. Keep the guys?

All I can say is that if two picks can be turned into one higher pick, that's probably a good idea, but even better would be packaging any and all picks together with any other assets we may have, other than Rondo, Bradley and Pierce, for a player we really want. It's unlikely to work, but that's what I'd love to see. Failing that, seeing what we get in the draft can't be bad, assuming Doc will actually play them. Where would Stiemsma be if Doc had refused to play him?

Greg, would have been misused somewhere else. Doc won't play picks, so get guys that can help.

That would be pretty freaking awesome. I mean, all the rumors say Pau - for iggy, for josh, for dwight, etc. - Pau can't be traded to ALL those teams!!

Bass and a pick for Smith? Would the new GM bite?

I wonder if it would have to be more than that.

I'd bet it would. I think Atlanta can manage getting more value from someone else than Bass + pick. If they blow it up - which is the news lately -, they'd likely want either of Triple J/Moore or (gulp) Bradley, who I would not give up under any circumstance. If Bass + Moore + 1st pick nets us Smoove - that's a great, great deal. Problem is, you can't officially trade Bass on draft day because he's a FA. We would have to agree on drafting for Atlanta for this to work.

Still, I think we may have to offer more, and we don't have much to work with at the moment. So don't expect anything to heat up on the Smoove front before and during the draft.

I think we would have to give Atlanta both picks, and some players. I've also thought that Ainge might move up in the draft and then offer that plus players to Atlanta. As far as I'm concerned, he could offer them the entire team outside of Pierce, Rondo and Bradley ... but it would almost have to involve Bass or Green, or even Bass and Green, and so it would get complicated to work all that, especially with the time lag.

The main thing is, for a player that we really want to put in Rondo's hands, we should be willing to move heaven and earth. It would take Danny at his very best to get anything done ... but who knows? I'm not expecting it, gotta say!

Folks will say that trading the kit and kaboodle would leave us with a weak bench, and probably it would, but we know that Ainge is very good at making something out of nothing, and it would be a good tradeoff to get the player we really want

But let's NOT pay Smith 20 million dollars if we do get him...
