"IN RONDO WE TRUST"

Celtics Blog Post New Entry

The next series will be up to KG and Rondo

Maybe the two healthiest stars on the Celtics right now, and maybe the most needed. They both bring two different styles of leadership, but they both also get their point's across. Rondo is the front line of the Celtics defense, and KG is the anchor, and the back line. Rondo, with Bradley will need to  put  ball pressure on the 76ers. Because the Sixers like to get out and run.

"They want to get into transition, and when they are in transition, they score," said Rivers. "When they are in half court, it's a little more difficult, so that's going to be our task. ... Listen, we're not going to outrun them, they are faster than us, they are going to win the track meet, no doubt about that. We have to find a way to get them to play in the half court.

When it comes to Rondo, and the offense. Rondo has pointed out that the Celtics are at their best on offense when their defense is clicking. If the Celtics are able to force turnovers, they will be able to get out, and run for easy baskets. Because the goal for the Celtics will be  to slow the game down to a half court offense. The Sixers rank 18th in half court offense, and their team is a transition team. So Rondo will have to be active on defense if the Celtics want to get easy hoops when they can. If the Sixers force the Celtics to run, than the C's will be in trouble.

As for KG he will have his hands full with Spencer Hawes, and Elton Brand. KG will need to get help from Bass,or Steamroller,or even Hollins if Doc continues to go with him. The Sixers have an active front court to deal with. KG will be key in the offense with Rondo running pick-and-roll in the half court sets. KG needs to be the offensive focus in this series. Pierce, and Allen are hanging on for dear life right now. The Celtics need to focus on Rondo, and KG on offense, and defense. Both guys need to carry the load, because the load is to heavy for Pierce. Hell, I could be wrong, maybe Paul will get the job done through the pain.

So now the series really comes down to defense.

If you thought the Celtics-Hawks series was a pain in the butt at times, this could be even worse. With the lock down defense that both teams are capable of using, each game might be all about  80 point wins. The 76ers ranked third in the league in allowing a mere 0.872 points per play this season. The team right ahead of them? Boston finished second at 0.857 points per play.

The difference, of course, is that the Celtics have struggled all season long in transition, while Philadelphia is strong regardless of the situation. The biggest area of doubt for the 76ers is isolation. This is when Rondo needs to work out of the post, and when we need to set up KG in the post. Maybe the best two passers on the Celtics working out of the post, seeing the play before it happens.

I strongly believe that both Rondo, and KG are the Celtics two biggest players, and they need them more than any other players. But the funny thing is? They need Pierce as well. It's hard to say out of the three who they need most at times. But the intangibles of Rondo, and KG make for a must needed ingredient  for the Celtics to win.

My worry is that controlling the pace will translate into walking the ball and standing around. We have to be aggressive. We have to push the pace, which is different from running, and we have to attack the basket, and also, when we attack the hoop, we have to go for offensive boards.
