Celtics Blog Post New Entry

Painful Loss to Pistons, 98-88

Posted by paul on February 15, 2012 at 10:00 PM

A lot of 'ifs' were left on the floor tonight.  If you are a Rondo fan, you can't be very unhappy with his performance.   His free throw shooting really hurt us, and while I was happy to see him shooting Js with confidence in the third quarter, I think he stayed with them too long.  We had our best success when we attacked the rim.  Also, when he posts up, Celtics. com observed, he doesn't realize that he can pass out of the post up situation.  Part of the reason we want Rondo scoring is because that will enhance his passing.

So I'm not going to put up a gilded statue to Rondo even though he played brilliantly in a loss.  Losing takes quite a bit of shine off the win, and it's legitimate to look for reasons even in the best player's game.  But you couldn't miss the fact that both times Rondo came off the floor for a breather, we struggled, and the game was really lost when Rondo took a breather in the fourth quarter.  When Rondo came back, he did a heroic job trying to get us back into the game, but he and Wilcox just can't do it alone.

We were outrebounded 33-44, and most of that was in the second half, and it wasn't even that close.  Johnson tried hard, but struggled to maintain position.   We are really hurting for Bigs right now, but then again, games like this are learning opportunties for Stiemsma and Johnson especially.   They can, and I think they WILL, improve.

More importantly, we only had 16 assists tonight.  We need to be close to thirty.  As a fan I'm very frustrated that we CONTINUE to see a situation where it seems that either Rondo is the dominant scorer, or Pierce is, .   In my opinion, Rondo should be the dominant scorer on this team, but it should not be an either/or situation between Pierce and Rondo.  It can't be.  We simply cannot win that way.  We need both guys scoring, and feeding off each other.

We have to take this season one game at a time, and we have to look at each one as a learning experience.  What a frustrating loss.  But, that said, it's pretty hard to play without your two best Bigs.  It's a hard row to hoe, for sure.  But we don't have a chance at all if Paul and Rondo can't achieve synergy.    Put bluntly, if Rondo is going to score 35 points, he should have at least ten assists.    We can beat anybody if we can get more scoring from the rest of the team, but Rondo and Wilcox alone won't get it.

And the D never really showed up.  Having Garnett out hurt a lot.

I'm trying not to be mad at Pierce and Allen, because I know Allen tried to do other things, and so did Pierce, who was apparently heavily defended, but you know, I'm sick and tired of those guys not showing up offensively when Rondo has a big game. Sometimes it really seems like they have an attitude, but of course no one EVER calls them out for attitude.

In any case we should have a lot more than 16 assists.

Of course a fan just had to say tonight, after the Pistons took control of the game 'this is what the future looks like if we rebuild around Rondo'.

People won't cut that guy a single break, will they?

Hes enterting his prime he could score 35 every night they stuck to the bodies of ray and paul tonight so he had to score and he did but when he took a break in the 4th it killed the game cuz ben gordon went off and by the time rondo came back he was more ice cold then ever.

What frustrated me was that when Rondo came back, for several minutes he tried to set up Allen and especially Pierce, or seemed to. If he would have attacked the basket and kept doing it and not deferred, he would have scored that magic 40 and we would have won.

But the fans are complaining that he didn't stick to his role. Rondo just can't win with those mean-spirited people.

Omg, THEY ARE EVEN MAKING PINING AND MOONING COMMENTS ABOUT LIN!!!!!!!!!!!!!

These people sit there, watching Rondo prove their criticisms wrong, and all they do is shift their ground.
Now he's too selfish. If we had Lin we would have won.

It goes to show you big KG is for us. The defense suffered all night. The Celtics would have held them to 84 points.

The fans must be young fans, its a fantasy driven sport, and they think its like a video game or something. Its also a shame the Celtics couldn't pull out a win in front of Russ tonight.

We sure missed KG. Their Bigs crushed us in the second half, didn't they?

I read, in comments, so maybe it means nothing, that folks in the locker room are complaining about not enough touches tonight.

But IT'S ALL RONDO'S FAULT!! Doc was complaining that the team didn't get its scorers involved. So Rondo is right back to the mixed messages. Thanks Doc. I love the way you stand up to the Big Three.

So it doesn't matter to anyone that Rondo IS a scorer, maybe a great one. Nope. Gotta shut that little punk down again, don't we? How DARE he believe in his own ability as he enters his prime.

He really is living in a kind of damned-if-he-does-and-damned-if-he-doesn't nightmare.

Rondo did soooooo much that we've been wanting him to do tonight, and answered so many criticisms. He showed he can really really score, almost at will at times. He showed that he really is developing a serious J. He showed that he can and will take charge and take responsibility in the 4th quarter. He showed that he can play both ends, not only shutting down his man, but also gambling for steals. People should be thinking 'wow, this guy REALLY is a guy we can build around'. Instead I see people saying 'see, this PROVES we can't build around Rondo.'

For God's sake, it's some kind of sports insanity.

Ray allens shot come via screens so if there not good screens or hes not shaking off his defenders then thts not rondos fault he cant dribble pass and screen for ray and pierce just look tired im thinkin after bad games hes gonna have a huge one tomorrow after being shut down twice by the bulls im not expecting a scoring game from rondo cuz hes gonna think hes needs to run the offense which will make me sad. Btw is it just me or is our pointguard our best post player now...

The thing is, he's our best option in so many ways. Really good point about the screens, but Ray still has to take responsibility to get open and hit shots. Especially when Rondo attacks the basket, that's a time to spot up and give him a passing target. There is something so wrong with the chemistry of this team that they just cannot figure out synergy between Rondo and Paul, but the main thing is, the way I see things, I badly DO want to see Rondo scoring tomorrow. He is a scorer, and we need that to be part of his game, and we also need the rest of the team to NOT just stand around when Rondo is scoring. Give him passing options, and you KNOW he will find you.

Looks to me like Doc was delighted with Rondo's performance and would love to see more! Stay aggressive!

Thanks for that link, jlil. What bothers me is that Doc seems to be saying that Rondo should be aggressive in transition, but not in the half court.
