"IN RONDO WE TRUST"

Celtics Blog Post New Entry

VALUE

Posted by Jeff Melhorn on January 20, 2012 at 2:20 PM

This word is one the Celtic fans need to understand. When DA says we would trade any of the Celtics if the right trade with value came across his desk. Let’s look into the word value and what I think it means to DA and the Celtics.

val•ue    [val-yoo] Show IPA noun, verb, -ued, -u•ing. noun

1. relative worth, merit, or importance: the value of a college education; the value of a queen in chess.

2. monetary or material worth, as in commerce or trade: This piece of land has greatly increased in value.

3. the worth of something in terms of the amount of other things for which it can be exchanged or in terms of some medium of exchange.

4. equivalent worth or return in money, material, services, etc.: to give value for value received.

Value can be represented in many forms like a player, draft pick, trade exemption or a combination of any of those. Will DA find value in getting 50 cents on the dollar for KG or Ray? Will PP be shipped to his home town for the right value? Look at #3 up there. That sentence sums up what the Celtics are in for.

I am in the camp of “you have 3 hall of fame players, without getting 3 back how can you call that VALUE?” I have a sneaking suspicion that DA is in the same boat with me. Not willing to trade in his old Lamborghini for a brand new Kia. Sure Kia’s are nice and for those whom need them to make their lives work, great for them. This town is not let’s try the newest greatest thing. We have always been the lets take something that works and bring it here to make it better.

Sure I have heard about the Fakers trying to get PP from our team. I think Paul would retire rather than play for them. However the Clippers could use him and I would be more than happy to take back Caron Butler and a piece to make it work.

The thing I am trying to point out is that Danny will probably not trade any of the big 3. The value will not be there to justify it and for the sake of next season let’s hope DA sticks to the plan. I really hope our team shakes off this early season funk and rights the ship to win the Atlantic Division or at least make it in to the playoffs. You know where they’ll be no back to backs and there will be time to rest and practice. That’s the time these Celtics will be a force to reckon with as long as there healthy.

In short DA, don’t do anything that may jeopardize our future for something that won’t help now or later.

I don't think you get it. Just by talking all this Trade Em crap, Danny is jeopardizing our future. The Celtics organization used to stand for something, and part of that something was NOT treating players like meat.
Sure, if Orlando offers Dwight Howard for KG, let's make that deal. But what Danny is doing now is basically treating the players like chunks of meat which, by the way, is not likely to motivate them if that indeed is what he is trying to do. It's likely to have the opposite effect, which in turn MAKES THEM EVEN LESS TRADABLE.

Basically, Danny is a Jerk. And with each day, he is revealing his true nature more and more starkly. Before all this started, I was still basically on his side. Now?

NOW I WANT DANNY GONE. Hear that Danny? And I'll bet I'm not the only fan who is sick and tired of you making horrible moves and then casting blame on everyone else for the results. I'll bet I'm not the only one sick of your lying. GET RID OF DANNY.

Keep the Big Three. Dump Danny.

Ainge has bright moments, but he doesn't know how to build a team. Of course he struck gold by making the Allen, and KG deal. Two other moves Danny found luck with? Rondo, and this the Bass deal. Danny can't build a team through the draft,or with sound deals. Look at the Spurs, and Jazz, and even OKC. They build through the draft even if they have a second round pick. The minor deals they make are sound. The Spurs don't have Manu, and Duncan is much older, but they still win with the talent they have. The Jazz lost their two best players last year, but look at this team. They have the right players playing in their sysytem. The Celtics have youth, but their no where near the level of some other teams who draft samrt. Ainge has struck out in this entire era, and in fact his tenure here besides the Rondo draft trade.

And to threaten the Big Three with a trade stick like this...

I have to respectfully disagree with you. Players play for a team. The team picks players to make them better. I don?t think any player or GM should stay with one team there whole careers. there is always the exception which PP is one. I really do think DA was just stating the obvious. When he brought Ray and KG here it was a 3 year window. On year 5 of said window it's time to move on either this season or the offseason coming up. I completely disagree with the whole notion that because Da said he would trade any player that any of the players take that personally. I am sure that it would irk them and may put them in a foul mood for a day or week even. To say it's going to affect them long term and disenfranchise them to this franchise is a bit much. This is a business and our players don?t mesh very well right now. Is it DA fault, some. Is it that we didn?t get CP3, David West or even Reggie Evens, could be. We are talking about adults that play a game for ungodly amounts of money. To say their feelings will be hurt because his boss just mentioned the word trade or tradable or the like is I think silly. Does it happen, sure. Basketball players are constantly babied and coddled. Do I think an adult should act that way NO.

Well Jeff, do you follow through on your 'it's just a business' theory? If Beijing offered the Celtics a lot of money to move there, you would be fine with that, correct? If KG decided that he didn't particularly care to break a sweat, you'd be fine with that too, right? Or is there more to all this than 'just business'?

If what you are saying is that being on a team is not ipso facto a guarantee of lifelong employment there, I agree. There are a lot of relativities here. There is a business aspect to sports, but it's also a lot more than that. A basketball team is part of a community, which is why there are such deep feelings in the community about it. And good players don't play just for money. They play for love of the game, and because of feelings of loyalty. You see, the concept of loyalty comes up again and again. It's the key to everything. For Danny to be threatening the players with his Trade Stick is shameful. It's not Big Baby he's talking about. It's three of the best and most dedicated players the Celtics have ever had. Danny should be ashamed of himself, and fans should be letting him have it. He is shaming us.

Bingo Paul! You hit the head on how I feel. I understand your point Jeff, but I feel different about it. Its business, and its not. Every worker is treated different because of skills, and hard work.

In my opinion, we always hear that phrase 'it's just a business' when someone is doing something they shouldn't be doing!
