Celtics Blog Post New Entry

Rivers technical speaking

It's never satisfying when  the refs take things into their own hands. It gives the game   a wrestling feel, and it's disgusting. Let the player's play the game. Did the Celtics lose because of the technical fouls, and a possible no call foul on Melo in the final 15 seconds? In this type of game it did cost them the game, but the Celtics put them selves in that spot.  I hate losing a game by two free throws, and from the technical free throws that should have never been given.

“Fourth-quarter technicals on our team are not allowed,’’ Rivers said. “That being said, the game has to be about the players. All right? I mean, c’mon. I thought both teams were complaining just the same, and we got the two techs. The game has to be about the players on the floor. That’s it.”

Without a doubt, the officials handed the game to the Knicks on a silver platter, in that they made it virtually impossible to put defense on Carmelo. We've seen that with Dirk too. I've long thought that NBA games and even seasons are heavily managed by refs, and I think it affects the way teams play too. Teams unconsciously pick up on which way the refs are leaning, I think, and this gives one team wings and gives the other lead feet. That said, the larger problem is that the Cs don't have anyone (I mean Rondo) who takes responsibility for the offense consistently in fourth quarters. I love it that Rondo is always looking to involve other players, but he should have taken responsibility for grabbing the rock and putting it in the basket in crunch time. He's still too deferential.
