Celtics Morning Joe: Pierce is the original Celtic

"He's the original Celtic and we go how he goes," Garnett said. "And nights when he's not going, we try to obviously support him and help him. But this is Truth's house, and there's never been a misunderstanding since I've been here. We have all the trust in the world in him."
I love KG, and I love his respect for his teammates. I won't go much into the Rondo topic. But it shows you that this was never Rondo's team. Enough with that.. This season has been weird for Pierce. His shooting percentage is the lowest since the 2003-2004 season. He's had a 40 point game, and he followed the game with a 36 point game. He's had some of the worst games of his career this season. With Rondo out. Paul has really taken control of this team. Without Rondo Paul has increased his assist total by two a game, but he's turning the ball over to much.
"We've still got our goals in the same place," Pierce said. "Ours don't change. Maybe [the goals of those outside the Celtics' locker room] have changed, but ours don't."
When you have two guys like Pierce, and KG on your team. They won't give in despite losing the driving force of the team, and the best player. They will give it what they have. They had so much depth going into the season, and it's being used now more than it was early on when Rondo played this season. The Celtics during this four game stretch haven't proved anything to me just yet. They beat a Clippers team without Chris Paul. Good win yes, but the Clippers didn't have their best player. The Celtics beat the Heat knowing nothing about Rondo, and they simply wanted the game, since they were riding a 6 game losing streak. The two middle games were against two teams who are frankly bad teams.
This team has more to prove, but all I care about right now? I want to beat the Lakers in the Garden this Thursday.

#1. This is why I love KG more than any of the other Celtics. Garnett shows nothing but intensity (to the point of outright belligerence sometimes, but I love his fire) but it's also mixed with humility. For all KG has accomplished in his career, and since coming to Boston, to say it's still Pierce's team shows he's in it for the team, not him. Typical Celtic attitude.

I haven't been on here much, and I'm going to try to get on more since I was banned from another Celtic's site, but I'm going to weigh this in on Rondo (and I'm sure this is going to fire up a lot of people, but just my opinion): The more I watch Rondo, the less impressed I am with him. Sure, he gets great numbers, but you watch him in the closing minutes of a tight game, and he makes almost no attempt to score. Truth be told, for all that they are still able to do, Pierce and KG are long enough in the tooth that when it matters most, it's getting more difficult for them to get a one-on-one shot when everybody KNOWS that's where the ball is going. As much as it absolutely, positively makes me sick to my stomach to use the Lakers as a comparison, Boston should have made the transition like LA did in 1987 when LA became Magic's team and Magic would take the last shot. Rondo should be the one getting the ball when it counts, and he either can't, or won't, make that leap.
And I agree with you, Shawn: All that matters this week is a win on Thursday night.

He was among the people who during the summer said that this was Rondo team; and now he is saying the exact opposite thing.
About the responsibility to take the last shot, I think that until last year Rondo probably didn't even want to take the shot in a close game. Since this year, I'm not sure if he doesn't want or he just can't.

If Rondo, "being the man" won't, or can't, take that last shot, then maybe this makes him expendable. It kind of reminds me of 2008 when you KNEW Perkins or Rondo were not going to shoot in the last 4 minutes of a tight game. But in 2008 Paul, Ray, and KG were 5 years younger, and there's a gargantuan difference between being 32 and being 37. The same explosiveness just isn't there.
I think if the team wins, or wins even more, without Rondo, this is going to make Rondo expendable. And if the Celtics have the guts to cut Rondo loose, I think we can get mega-value in return for him.
I think the difference between "won't" and "can't" is really big.
If they don't want to build the team around him, then yes, they should let him go (even if this would totally broke my heart). But I believe they would lose one of the best players in the league, and a really special talent. They just need to make a choice.

You will not get mega value for Rondo if he doesn't come back right after an acl. He had questions about his game before. They will even be bigger now. If and only if Rondo comes back better then you can. I doubt he would want to be on this team anyway, so maybe he can request a trade. I don't see much of a future for the C's tbh. Their stars are old and the youngs aren't that special.
