Rondo sounds off on suspensions

Posted by shawn cassidy on January 10, 2013 at 1:00 AM

Yes Chris Paul he has one of these.

"Oh man, I get suspended for a phone hang-up and people just get away with anything in this league. Oh my goodness, so that’s the same thing, huh?"

As you all know Rondo was recently given a one game suspension before the New York game for basically hanging up the phone on the league. Rondo voiced his opinion. Rondo also addressed the video.

"I’m in the video. What do I have on? You can tell it’s me? Yeah, I had the hood on, didn’t I? Uncomfortable? I’m a nice guy. I was pretty comfortable. I didn’t want anything to happen to the big fella. I had my teammate's back. Nobody was looking for a fight or anything. We just tried to break it up and I wanted to be there for my teammate. Just because I got suspended doesn’t mean I’m a bad person. Why can’t I be a peacemaker?"

Rondo also agreed with Doc, and Rondo feels the love from fans.

"I agree with Doc. Fans come to see the players, their favorite players. I happen to be some fans’ favorite players -- a couple. The fans still love me. They don’t really judge me as much as the media does. It’s part of the job. It’s part of the role."

Well, Rondo if you read the blogs. A lot of fans were ready to trade you.

Yes Paul, Rondo has a title, and you don't. Rondo sounded off nicely. Always has a teammates back.

I like everything Rondo said, but that doesn't mean I'm not worried about him. Especially if he continues to play lackluster ball, another suspension could wreck his career. I love it that he doesn't kowtow, but at the same time, you don't want to act like there's one rule for you and another rule for everyone else. That said, there so IS one rule for him and one rule for everyone else! The ref didn't even react to the 'bump' during the game, but the league suspends hiim? Meanwhile, Melo tries to start a riot, a real riot, not a fake Kris Humphries brouhaha, and he gets the same as the Rondo ref moment gets?

Rondo's right about the media. They said he 'stared down' Melo. Really? I don't see that, in the video, anyway. I see him standing there quite peacefully. The media read nasty intentions into everything he does, and they refuse to see context. It's like when the ref stood there in Detroit and watched as Monroe clobbered Rondo outrageously, and didn't even call a foul, much less a flagrant foul. Why didn't the media put Rondo tossing the ball to the ref slightly hard into that context? Here we have Melo basically going nuts right outside the Cs' bus, and trying to start something, and Rondo standing there very peacefully, with his hands in his pockets, essentially quietly reminding Melo that it's the Celtics' bus he's at, not his own bus. That makes Rondo a bad guy?

But Rondo's got to understand, another suspension could really wreak havoc, not only in the way fans see him (many delight in his downfalls), but potentially in his career. As Doc said, he's really got to work harder at being passionate without crossing key lines. Look at how KG knows when to back away. And also Rondo, the harder you work on the floor, the more leeway you get. Honestly, that's part of how it works. When people see you diving on the floor for the ball, and generally playing hard, they cut you way more slack.

Yes, you have your fans, and you deserve them for your passion and creativity, but don't think your fans are blind, or that they can't or won't criticize. If folks come to believe that you are substituting posturing for hard work, it won't go over well at all.

Great comment Paul!! I agree with basically everything you wrote above.
The only doubt is that even if Rondo plays hard every day, I don't think the league is gonna give him more leeway. The problems began last year because the refs won't call a foul even when Rondo is hacked in the paint.
When he first entered in the league, Rondo showed everybody that he was just himself and he doesn't want to bow down for stupid rules. Look at the upside down headband that they banned!! And the league does not like this kind of personality, especially considering that Rondo is, maybe, the only one that is brave enough to criticize them and act like he really is. That said, I'm worried about this too.
As he said, he'll need to adapt. Not change, but adapts at the man-hunt that the league and the media are doing on him.
As I wrote after the suspension, After what he said in the last couple of interviews (the one after the suspension and this one) if I was the league and the media, I would feel ashamed and I would feel the need to apologise with him. Rondo showed everybody that, as you said best, there is one rule for him, and another rule for everybody else.
