NBA NIGHTLY RUNDOWN: NBA News and Scores, and more

Posted by shawn cassidy on January 2, 2013 at 12:50 AM

It's the new year, and I want to be more consistent myself with more NBA news. I do a few Nightly Rundown's here, and there. But I want to be a one stop site, and here we go!

Games of the Night

Let's start with the Celtics division rival the New York Knicks. Melo dropped 45, and Amare returned. Amare came off the bench, and I tuned into the game, and Amare, and Melo had some good moments on the court. It wasn't enough.

The Trail Blazers overcame Carmelo Anthony's season high-tying 45 points and spoiled Stoudemire's season debut, beating New York 105-100 on Tuesday night.

"I felt good," Stoudemire said. "The game felt like it was going 100 mph that first half. Had a couple of easy-looking shots, open shots, just a little bit rusty, wasn't able to knock those down. But the second half was better than my first half. Hopefully my second game will be better than my first game."

Vince Carter scored 23 points, and O.J. Mayo and Darren Collison each added 15 to help the Mavericks break their six-game losing streak with a 103-94 win over the Washington Wizards on Tuesday night.

A strong second-half performance helped the Dallas Mavericks avoid their first seven-game skid in nearly 14 years.

During an undefeated five-week run by the Los Angeles Clippers, the Denver Nuggets were just another team they beat along the way. The second time around, the Nuggets were the team that ground the Clippers' streak to a halt.Danilo Gallinari led six Nuggets players in double figures with 17 points and Denver stopped the Clippers' franchise- record winning streak at 17 games with a 92-78 victory Tuesday night.

The Clippers' streak was the longest in the NBA since the Boston Celtics won 19 in a row from Nov. 15-Dec. 23, 2008.

"We were all a step slower today," said Blake Griffin, who had 12 points for the Clippers. "We've got to be better than that. We're not going to sit and cry on the plane and get beat down. We're not going to cause ourselves to lose our confidence, despite what people want us to do. That's the best thing about the NBA -- you've got another game."

The NBA had three other games. You'll see the Lakers score in Lakers news. But in the other two games. The Pistons beat the Kings 103-97, and the Hawks won 95-86 over the Pelicans.

Nets stick with P.J. Carlesimo for now

Despite high-profile names like Phil Jackson and Jeff Van Gundy being tossed around, Brooklyn Nets general manager Billy King says he has "not contacted anybody" about becoming the permanent replacement for recently fired head coach Avery Johnson.King told Ian O'Connor during an interview on ESPN New York 98.7 FM on Sunday morning that the team "supports" interim coach P.J. Carlesimo and will "re-evaluate" things moving forward, while deflecting questions about Jackson by repeatedly saying "P.J.'s our coach."

"We've put our support behind (P.J.) and then we'll look at things and evaluate it later," King said. "I know people have been throwing lists together and things like that, but we have not contacted anybody. ... We've made the move and now we're going to let P.J. coach."

Ricky Rubio will skip road trip

Minnesota Timberwolves point guard Ricky Rubio will not travel with the team for a two-game road trip to Utah and Denver this week because of back spasms.Rubio missed the game against Phoenix on Saturday after being unable to get his back loosened up. Coach Rick Adelman says the team is just being cautious with Rubio, who is coming back from a torn ACL in his left knee. Rubio has played in five games this season after making his debut in the middle of last month.

Adelman thinks some of Rubio's back issues could be caused by him overcompensating for a knee that has not yet gotten back to full strength.

Rubio hopes to be ready to play at home on Saturday against Portland.
